The waters of the ocean danced in the moonlight. There was no island in sight. No life. Nothing. Nothing that the eye could see, anyway. Beneath the blanket of waters, there were cities. Whole civilizations who had never seen the sun. The waters covered them, hiding them from the world, and vice versa. The land was wet and lush, full of vegetation and life. Some birds were in the trees, but most of them were hunted out. Strange beasts that were supposed to be legends roamed the forests, along with strange assortments of creatures. The trees were mostly willow on the edges of the land, their leaves a silver hue. The trees inland were mostly aspen, oak and fruit trees, their leaves dappled in color from the reflection of the waters above. There were cities, each forming a circle, gradually getting smaller, and the last city that formed the circle was hardly noticeable. Hardly more than a suckerfish among a shiver of sharks. Regardless, it is where we are starting this tale. It’s where my memories be

-gin. Memories of great wonders that will be told from father to son for many generations. There were walls around the city, towering above with strong gray walls, outposts lining the top, like sprinkles on a cake. A very hollow cake. And the sprinkles were spikes. The city’s design was like a web, in the center was a large building about the size of a schoolhouse. Close to the schoolhouse-like building were small triangular dorms, each about the size of a shack that could house one person, but they somehow managed to house four. In the furthermost dorm, there were the town’s children in the year of the Barbara tree, or as you would understand, the children who were 15-16 years of age. Inside, there were two bunks. The bottoms of both looked like they had been lived in, but whoever lived there had disappeared. On the top left bunk, there was a young teen with black hair and dark cream skin. He turned, the dappled moonlight seeping through cracks in the roof, right onto his face. He opened his beetle

black eyes, looking around cautiously. The dim lighting made it hard to see, but he was able to make out the figure on the opposite bunk. He was fifteen, slim and tall, like someone had stretched him. His feet were bandaged, the foot looking more like a paw than the bare toes of the first boy, swathes wrapped around the arch of his foot to his ankles. He wore baggy navy sweatpants, with a gray-blue tee shirt, which fitted him in height, but appeared to be two sizes too big. He had long silver-brown hair, his skin darker than the first boy’s. He was the one. I have known it since I met him. I don’t know much about him, but I have a feeling. A feeling that is impossible to shake. He is important somehow. I’ll be his friend, even if he doesn’t know it. He needs my help, or in the strange ways of the universe, I need his. He stirred at the other boy’s gaze, opened his eyes, then shot up, hitting his head on the roof, collapsing off the bunk with a small cry of shock.

The onlooking boy burst out laughing, not trying to hide it. “Very funny Chavez…” the boy groaned, holding his head, looking up at the boy named Chavez. Chavez only smiled more. “Well Void, if you weren't such a klutz, then you might actually get a friend.” Void blinked, slightly taken aback, then he shook his head. “What do you want, anyway? It’s not time to get up yet, is it?” Chavez scoffed, “Are you deaf? Do you hear people? No. Either they have all left, or they are all asleep. So either I am late, or I am early.” “You. It’s all about you. It’s dark. You are early.” Void sighed, making his way to the side of his bunk. Chavez rolled his eyes. “It’s fall, you worm. It’s dark for longer.” Void narrowed his eyes, offended. “You know very well I am not a-” Chavez was already at the entrance of the dorm, looking over his shoulder briefly.

“See you at breakfast,”he scoffed, shaking his head. “I mean, see you if you are lucky.” He rolled his shoulders, then walked off, leaving Void alone. Void stared at the doorframe, then sighed heavily. Hugging himself, he watched the smoke from his own breath curl and dance in front of him, then he looked at the bottom of the bunk he had once shared. There were papers and scrolls littering the bed, along with some photos. The photos were faded, and hard to see, but I could tell there were some children in the pictures. Void touched the photos gently, then shuddered , either from the cold or grief. It was hard to tell. Void pulled himself up the frame half way, just being able to reach his bunk, grabbing a thin rope. Void sighed, tying up his long hair with the string. Looking out into the land from the door, the night humming around the dorms. Animals could be heard calling to each other, a handful of birds singing in the distance. No one was there. It was peaceful.

He walked out, not going to the main building, where Chavez had gone, but instead to a small section of the city where the wall let some water in, a filter in the wall removing the salt in the water, the soft hum of gears turning to clean the water filling the air. He took a moment, staring out to the waters, letting out a sigh. His reflection was disturbed by the presence of a boulder in the water. He didn’t mind. Instead, he waded out to the boulder and knelt on it. In a crevice of the stone, there was a patch of large lily-like flowers. Void picked a white flower and knelt next to the water, gently setting the flower in the water. The flower danced in the water, the gears of the filter it’s music, the flower drifting away from Void. He sat there for a while, his long strands of his hair covering some of his face, looking into the water. His left eye was a shade of amber that looked like fire, the right eye a dark green.

Though the water reflected the dappled moonlight from the waters above, his eyes swallowed the light, and seemingly his ability to express emotions, for the poor child was fairly emotionless. He sat at the water’s edge for a while, the waters above gaining light, casting the land in an orange filter. Void looked up at the water covered sky, reluctantly rising from the edge of the water. He looked out across the water once more, then turned to head to the main building. -end of chapter one-
