People say nothing is impossible. Though, when they see something impossible, they deny it exists. And yet, the impossible is happening. We have lived on this land for all our lives. Generations passed down, each home telling it’s own story. Each stream has importance. Each tree is sacred to our nation. We have lived in peace with other nations in harmony, and unison. We work and share the fruits of our labor. We were a peaceful tribe. We had lived among humankind for so long, but now they have turned without any warning. Why, one may ask. I don’t know. I stared in horror as pillars of smoke paraded across our village. Children could be heard crying for their mothers over the crackle of the flames. A group of young elves were running to the streams with buckets in hopes of saving something. Anything. I wasn’t a part of them. I had something more important to do. I had to find the cause of this chaos.

I made my way through the panic and chaos, seeing some creatures from the other nations trying to help stop the flames. The woodwhics leaped from home to home, scooping out young children that were trapped. The sylphrocs could be seen harnessing wind and water together to keep the flames from spreading further. I ran to the bridge to the human side of the city. The flames had not touched their side at all, their buildings untouched. Odd. I looked around for something. Someone who would know what was going on. Preferably not Aklemda. I saw a small group of humans further on the river bank. They were watching the destruction. They were lined up, each holding a weapon. Something to destroy. I approached them, taking in a breath, shielding the fact I was stressed. I had to do that often, for I am a leader. As I approached, I recognized one of them as the leader of human civilization. His dark hair contrasting with his hazel skin, his eyes the color of the flames swallowing my home. I caught my breath.

It was just my luck to run into him. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t the legendary Vivian Lucentio. How is it being ‘king’ of your ‘people’? Did a little candle get out of hand?” He mocked, his voice glowing like the flames. I flinched at my name. Aklemda’s voice scorched into my mind, tainting my calm, shifting my heart from patience to anger. “What do you want? Don’t you have enough to do, Aklemda?” I cried. Aklemda smiled smugly. “Elves wouldn’t understand.” He laughed. “Of course you wouldn’t. You don’t see the problem. We are growing, and we need more space. I recommend you leave, or all your people will die.” I stared at Aklemda in shock. He was getting rid of us. But why? We have lived side by side for centuries, without a problem. My head throbbed, but it probably was from the smoke. I looked at the flames, then back at Aklemda, grief tearing at my heart. The humans did this. They made peace only to turn on us when we were vulnerable.

“This is rash! We are growing too!” Aklemda snarled, drawing a small dagger to my neck, its blade piercing my skin, but not enough to cut it. Not yet, anyway. “You will leave, or you will die. Do I make myself clear?” I gulped, my vision slightly blurred. “Yes…” He lowered the dagger slowly to his side. “Then go. Take the rest of your kind with you. And preferably the other beasts. I mean, unless you want this to happen to them too.” I stared at him, terror rooting me to the spot, my chest tight. My mind screamed at me to move, to attack, to flee. The battle in my head raged, my head throbbing. “Too scared?” He taunted. “Well, fine. I’ll give you a demonstration of what will happen if you stay. Gather some of their youth,” Aklemda commanded. One of the men next to him nodded, and walked off.

“What? No! We’ll leave!” I cried desperately, my mind screaming at me to do something. “I don’t think you understand. Not yet. You will understand after this.” Aklemda soothed simply, like he was explaining something to a child. I turned to leave, only to find I was surrounded. I spun back towards Aklemda, whose expression was smug. “There is no escape, at least for you. How about a little burn so you also experience what your ‘people’ are dealing with?” I swallowed as he grabbed a torch from one of his colleagues. He approached me, his amber eyes flickering like the fire destroying my home, and the fire in his hands. He lowered the torch, pressing it against my leg. I screamed, my eyes watering with pain. The pain was nothing like I had ever experienced. I tried to move away, only to get pinned down. My insides squirmed. How much longer will this last? Will we survive? Will I even make it?
