Shakespeare, born in 1564, was a very influential and popular author who wrote plays that are still taught in school today. In the play, the tragic hero Macbeth is told by three witches he is destined to be king. Macbeth takes this as a sign that he must remove the current Thane of Cawdor, Duncan. With persistent demands from his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth gives in and murders Duncan, claiming the throne for his own. His illegal act of slaughtering the king creates a spiral of terrible events, eventually leading to Macbeth’s own downfall. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for King James I sometime in the late 1500’s to the early 1600’s. In the tragic drama of Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the motif of blood throughout the play to illustrate a larger concept of how the guilt of one’s terrible actions will only continue to haunt them in the future.
