art is not meant to cater to you, or to any one person. In fact, art is better when it pushes you out of your comfort zone. Not necessarily in creating it, but in consuming it. Problematic themes are not bad and to be abhorred, they are there to get you to think deeply about things. Take, for example, Nabokov's Lolita. He wasn't writing that cause he's a pedo, he was writing it to call out a social issue of the time, where pedos were seen as totally okay so long as the girl wasn't "too young." he used lolita to bring up a social issue and exaggerate it and serve as slight satire to get the reader to think "hmm, the pedos aren't okay" by making them uncomfortable. The book would have meant nothing if it depicted a normal relationship, but by making it as creepy as it is, nabokov SAYS SOMETHING WITH HIS ART. yeah, things can be problematic. Artists should not be cancelled for making something problematic or not perfectly up to modern day standards because those need not be applied to art.

if the author is coming out and saying, out of character, "KILL ALL BLACK PEOPLE" that isn't okay and we all know it's not okay. Having a character who is like that and is portrayed a grey morality character? not bad. Following a character who is not a good person? also not bad art should not be sanitized for other people to enjoy in order to not offend them. So much good art will be neutered if we do that. There is already so much meaningful art that could not have been created in modern times because it has some meaningful "problematic" elements. I can think of multiple things off of the top of my head that would be "cancelled" today because the cast is all men or the main character is a bit homophobic or whatever. the fact that everyone points their fingers at a book like lolita or the concept of genderbending is just depressing to me. a lot of the art i want to create is "problematic" and uncomfortable. the lesbian is abusive. god is a dickhead. the character is only NB because they were shamed into
