this issue bothers me a lot as a current trans-masc individual cause i feel as though nobody really actively acknowledges it or i dunno maybe it’s just a big non-issue and i’m just not looking hard enough to find trans-male rep. when i say rep i really do mean rep as a whole good and bad it’s always “trans-woman do es bad thing”, “trans-woman in woman’s bathroom!!!1!!1!”, “trans-women are monsters” blah blah blah alla that awful transphobic crap but then there’s also so much good coverage of trans women. videos for trans women on being more traditionally feminine by trans women, guides by trans-fem women on their routine and what clothes they wear as well as many trans women being portrayed in shows, games, literature, etc. not all of these portrayals especially in tv are good portrayals mind you i just want to make that clear but the point is they do in fact exist.

this rep of trans women good or bad has pushed the idea of trans women existing into the public eye with some people seeing it and becoming enraged or even humoured at the idea of a trans woman or becoming more aware and accepting of the existence of trans-fem individuals. so where do trans men come in? uhh relatively nowhere? maybe it’s just me but i can’t think of any other piece of content that has trans-masc rep besides like goth from the webtoon boyfriends and boyfriends objectively SUCKS. the idea of trans men existing as actual people is such an absurd idea to the average cis person because you barley see em’ in anything you might see or consume in your day to day life

the idea of femininity and feminine beauty is such a powerful concept. this is why people harass trans women and say they’re “creeps pretending to be women” or “men who are trying to lure in women” because it traces back to the beauty of femininity. so strong even a “man” would want to be female. the idea that a person born female would ever want to be masculine is seen as a tomboy phase or just a girl who needs a whole glow-up montage to be a pretty feminine beauty in a dress. it’s never taken seriously most notably in things like disney shows that take the simple tomboyish girl character and put her in a dress for a dreamy party or some guy. and somehow despite seeming to hate femininity every other time the character is very fine being a pretty girl that one time. now i’m not saying every tomboy/masc girl is a trans man automatically but what i mean is that the idea of a girl who just wants to exist with masc tastes is immediately taken out of that role when the show writers see fit.

it comes off as disingenuous wanting to display a more masculine woman but not wanting to lean into the masc part fully because they’re always girl that wil have to be girly at some point. with the way we don’t take trans men seriously being sparsely represented in mainstream media it has inevitably trickled down into online spaces where the idea of masculinity from trans-men is seen as laughable and that they’re just in a phase or will never be a real man because they don’t act the same as cis men. in online spaces trans-masc people are usually all victim to feeling like they’re not real men at some point just because they aren’t amab (assigned male at birth) they aren’t seen as real men because people can’t let go of the idea of femininity when they think of these people and the thought that the person they see used to be female will never exit their brain.

this idea that trans-masc people come from a fem background is always the part spoken the loudest and it leads back to the idea that they hardly get represented in media because they’re never acknowledged by both cisgendered people and sometimes even the trans community which whether you like it or not tends to shed more light on trans-women as they’re always the focus. if you disagree with me you’re wrong i hate you grr!! no but i’d genuinely like to hear your opinion if you have anything to add or counter me on you can provide examples of trans-masc rep or just give me your take! it’s always lovely to see more sides to something but remember please be respectful! i love all my trans people out there especially those who struggle with dysphoria about how they look. just know that you are who you are and nobody can tell you otherwise not even your own appearance <3 !!
