LinkBut anyways rn I’ll talk about the mouse
So there isn’t any reputable mouse breeders around where I live ( if you do know any reputable breeders or rescues of small rodents in Alabama lmk but I haven’t got any dice ) so I knew if I was gonna get a mouse it would have to be from a chain pet store
And that’s not great because the care these stores keep there animals in isn’t suitable and there’s rescues that have a bunch of animals that need homes
But I didn’t have anyone near me that was available, I’ve been on Craigslist and stuff but no one came up

LinkBefore any of this I already started on my bin cage, a bin cage is basically a diy cage made out of a bin, chicken wire and zip ties
I wanted a hamster but realized that the square footage wasn’t enough, and then I looked into mice and I thought what’s the harm in trying to make this cage work out for a mouse
I always go to the petstore because I like to look at the animals, which I know is like I said petstores are irresponsible and I still do but it was the only way I could enjoy myself and I never bought anything while I was there before
But this time I ended up coming out with a male feeder mouse

LinkNo one here even knows that there’s ppl who want to keep mice as pets, the lady that gave me the mouse said that she was glad someone was getting a mouse to keep as a pet

LinkSeriously ask any petstore about pet mice and I bet you there gonna look at you and ask “oh you mean feeder mice” obviously yeti wasn’t a pet mouse, he wasn’t socialized much and definitely wasn’t prepared to be a pet, he was skittish and hid as soon as I put him in his bin

LinkBut over the last two weeks and socializing him he’s been getting way more comfortable
I think he realized he isn’t gonna be snake food 😭
Yeti isn’t like the kitten I fostered a month ago, he’s a pet and will be staying with me
This is the first pet I’ve really had to care for for myself
Also I think i might have over estimated how much care a mouse is, the kitten really set my bar high w pet care

LinkI love this mouse dawg
And I don’t mean to bash on ppl who need live food for there snakes or other reptiles
Everyone has to eat
Me personally i think I could handle feeding frozen food to a reptile but live food I’d probably have to skimp out on
I never intended on getting a mouse originally, but I appreciate him a lot anyways
Theres some sufferers of depression that can’t have animals because they might neglect them like themselves, but there’s others who benefit from having something to love
After I had to take care of Pearl my mom thought it would be alright for me to have my own animal
A smaller one but I’ll take it

LinkHe’s my mousie my mouse
My first rule was that no one can pick him up by the tail again
Theres this fight about if picking a mouse up by the tail is cruel or not
I’ve heard it’s a extension of there spine and there small so, even if it doesn’t stress them out I don’t like it since it still poses a risk
It’s not like a possum or monkey tail where they can hang from it- it’s used to redirect heat and balance themselves

LinkI’ve only been picking him up from cupped hands or from a toilet paper tube ( he crawls in the tube and then I pick him up ) and it’s been working fine
I know there’s people who like to get a bunch of rodents but I like to have one,
One is enough for me

LinkMice only live for around 2 to 3 years
I’m not sure how old yeti is but I want to atleast make the rest of his life nice and comfy
Specifically the petstore I went to the male and female mice were held in two different cages together
Females work well together but males tend to fight and be aggressive
Which is why I only got yeti, if you get a female mouse ppl recommend getting 3 and if you have a neutered male mouse you can house him w 2 or more female mice
Having a cat or dog to myself seems really intimidating for me, I like to stick to smaller animals ( and this doesn’t mean all small animals are easy to care for, rabbits especially can be just as taxing as dogs or cats ) but if I had to foster a cat or dog I’d be up for it
Puppies are no go
Is there a reason your getting another cat?
