Hollow Knight is a game released in 2017 about silly little buggers. The game itself is fantastic, but im not here to talk about why Myla is the greatest person ever or why the gameplay is amazing. No, i want to talk about the works of Christopher Larkin, the composer. Words cant even BEGIN to describe how much i love this soundtrack. I will start on the main theme, titled ‘Hollow Knight’ It plays at the main menu. It is a sad and somber combination of calm piano and violin. No joke, when i was listening to the ost for the first time by itself, i started crying because of how sad it is. It already tells the player that this game is going to be depressing and sad. Next track I’ll talk about, ‘Reflection’ This song plays at the stag stations, the trams, and the bench areas. It's a beautiful song made up of the harp and violin. It shows that you're safe from danger and that nothing can touch you while inside these sanctuaries.

The bosses in hollow knight are real treats to enjoy. It ranges from an enraged maggot wearing the armor of a fallen warrior to a cult leader to even your half-sister. And eventually, your brother. Lets start with my favorite boss, Grimm. Grimm is an interesting bug, the ‘cult leader’ as i referred to him as. The task is to “Burn the father, Feed the child.” Grimm gives you the grimmchild charm, and you have to collect flames to well, feed the child. Once you do this twice, you have to fight the grimmchilds father. The one you had to help babysit his child. Grimms fight is frustrating but the theme is AMAZING. A haunting organ combined with vocals and blaring orchestral music, its wrapped together in one neat horrifying package to symbolize the power of the nightmare king. Around the halfway point, it begins implementing electrical guitars and heavy drums to intensify the fight. Its a real treat to enjoy and is candy for your ears.

Now to talk about my other favorite boss, Nosk. Nosk is actually a secret boss you can find in deepnest. The fight itself is PISS EASY but the build-up and the music for Nosk are horrifying. Nosk is a creature that can look into its victims' memories and impersonate the victims' loved ones. Since Nosk is a type of spider it makes sense it would be in deepnest. But you find it impersonating you, or little ghost. The music is mainly composed of intense strings, and i feel this is chosen because it symbolizes a spider, or Nosk in our case wrapping up its victim and watching them slowly die off when they feed. Or, a spider running on its web to wrap up prey. The prey in this metaphor is us. Fortunately, little ghost is a little nightmare who can kill anything. And nosk is killed But these two songs are just minor little things compared to The Radience.

Oh boy. Where do I even begin to talk about the Radiance? She is the cause of everything the player and npcs had to go through. She drove myla to madness. Killed our sibling from the inside, and made every bug on the surface terrified to go down into the crossroads. The moth goddess. The light. The Radiance. The boss theme is composed of bells, pipe organ, vocals, and an amazing orchestra to show the royal power this goddess has. Everything has built up to her fight, and it pays off beautifully. The most powerful part of this song is when you and your fallen siblings are ascending the platforms to finish the Radiance once and for all. The vocals go higher along with the organ and bells. I look forward to Christophers next work in Silksong. Overall, I give the soundtrack a 10/10. And that concludes my stupid rant on Hollow Knight
