Female Shinefly facts: Females are usually the dominant gender in most Shinefly nests. The adult female is able to spin a very soft silk for the young of the nest. They also are the only ones with stingers. They only use them when any babies or eggs are in danger. They are also the only ones with two antennae. Their antennae are able to sense danger, communicate, and smell. Females also are the only ones with legs. These legs are used for helping the young that haven't developed wings yet. They walk next to the babies and make sure they make it to where they need to go, safely. These legs are also used for landing, holding, and silk-spinning. Male Shinefly facts: Male Shinflies are always on the move from one nest to another. They are sort of like a gateway to information from other nests. Only the males have the ability to produce a sort-of nectar from their antennae. This feeds any young in the nests. In a community, there is always a very large nest in the center of the hive.

This nest is where the nectar comes from, and also where most males are born. Male Shineflies are also smaller than females, and often take orders from them. Males don't have legs because they are always on the move, unable to take time to land. Because of this, males have great aim. Baby Shineflies open their mouths, and the adult males send nectar into them.
