It’s lunchtime and me and my group of friends are all laughing. I hear my name up on the loudspeaker to report to the principal, my dad. I abandon my uneaten lunch as I head up to the back of the school. I didn’t think of it as a big deal at the time, so I head straight up the stairs, open the door, and quickly take the seat opposite to my dad. We sit there for a bit, looking around. The room is painted a light beige, with one window to the left of the wooden table, separating me and my dad. He clears his throat. “I think you know why you’re here,” He said. I didn’t. I didn’t know what he was talking about. “N-no,” I splutter. “It’s Xavier, the kid in your class,” he said, sightly agitated. “Uh, yes?” I reply, confused. “Your friend Callie, she’s been bullying him,” He looks at the window and then back at me. “I thought you knew… Anyway, I’d like you to be friends with him,” I thought for a bit. “Yeah, I will. Thanks dad,” I stood up in my seat and then walked out of the office.

The bell screams at me, making me want to cover my ears. I head off to my math class. I take a seat next to my best friend Callie. It didn’t seem like a thing that she would do- bully a kid- but I still want to ask her about it. “Callie? You know that kid Xavier?” She looks at me, then turns her head to face the back of the class, and back to me again. “Yeah, what about him?” I sigh, then face the whiteboard, where our teacher is writing the next equation. “What’s he like? I mean- assuming you’ve talked to him before?” She laughs a bit, “He’s a nerd, Sheldon. He has no friends,” This makes me want to slap her. I decide to stay quiet for the rest of the lesson. After the bell, I head out and decide to go find Xavier. It didn’t take long. I found him sitting in the library, reading a book about volcanos. I grab the first book I see and take a seat next to him. He takes a quick glance at me and then buries his face in the book again, earning me a quick “hey.” We sit there in silence for the rest of the break. I

put the book I picked back into the shelf and walked to my last class. It was a surprise when I saw Xavier tagging behind me. “We have science together,” he said, in a matter-of-fact voice. I give him a quick nod and we keep walking. Suddenly a figure appears before us both.

Callie easily towers above both of us, casting her shadow on top of me and a cowering Xavier. “Don’t hurt me!” he spluttered, terrified. I stand in front of Xavier, shielding him from any possible attacks she may strike at him. “What are you doing Sheldon? I thought we were friends!” she shot at me, before punching me in the stomach. I recoil, leaving Xavier exposed. I don’t know what’s going on, so I do the only thing I knew what to do in this situation. Run. I ran all the way into my science classroom, and to my desk. Exhausted, I drop my bag on the floor next to me and slump down in my seat. I couldn’t think for the rest of the class, so I fell asleep. I snap out of the trance I was in when I hear the bell go. I run as fast as I could to go find Callie.

I found her sitting behind the school by herself with a lighter and a cigarette. She flicked the lighter and saw me standing there, the shock making her drop it onto the ground. I stood there in shock as the ground caught on fire and flew across the grass. I dropped my bag in shock and ran to go find Xavier again. Just as I turned around I found him standing behind me, like a deer transfixed by headlights, tears running down his face. “Xavier, we have to go!” I screaming at him. He stood there, not responding. I grabbed his hand and we sprinted to the gate. It was chaos. Kids running everywhere, even the teachers didn’t know what to do. I quickly dropped Xavier on the ground and without thinking I ran to go help as many kids I could. I didn’t realise how long I was gone but Xavier had pasted out on the ground. I flung him over my back and I took him over to the gate where I laid him on the ground, in safety. I suddenly felt a force on my leg as I turned around to find Callie pulling me back into the school.

I woke up in the hospital, shaking. Callie was in the bed beside me, still unconscious. Xavier was standing next to my bed with a bunch of assorted flowers in his hand. He put them in the vase beside me. “Thanks for saving me out there, I owe you one,” he said, laughing a bit. I smiled, and drifted back into a state of unconsciousness, knowing I did the right thing.
