LinkI’m not sure why ppl think it’s racist for non black ppl to have dreads ,it’s not.dreads don’t even come from black culture.plus it’s a hair style, it may not look good on everyone but it’s their personal choice it’s their responsibility,it’s their hair

LinkTrue
I’m just gonna try to explain why people say it’s bad, but I’m not an expert so take this explanation with a grain of salt. Basically, dreads are a protective hairstyle that Black people tend to use because their hair type needs it. Black people’s hair has been historically policed and they have experienced discrimination related to their hair (such as: being forced to shave it, protective hairstyles being banned, protective hairstyles being considered unprofessional etc). So the problem is that non-Black people who wear typically Black hairstyles are taking the hair, but none of the discrimination or history that comes with it. It’s like a symbol of pride and identity that’s being worn by people not in their community with no consideration for its symbolic meaning.
Of course I’m white and this is just what I gathered from Instagram infographics 😭
