Octowings are mostly aquatic, their underwater language, marine, is spoken through talon shapes, shapes made with their tails and facial expressions. They make light weight armor out of shells due to their softer scales. In tribe they trade specially marked clam shells as currency, but they do have gems for trade with other tribes.

There are a few small land cities, (mostly occupied by the poorer citizens) but most cities, and the main palace are located underwater. The queen sends some special selected dragons to live with some Timewings so they can figure out how to craft underwater versions of some of their inventions. This role is considered highly respectable, despite being mostly land locked during the time they stay.

Octowings switch out these small groups every month. They prefer salt water over fresh water.
