LinkTrends:
Flipanim has had many trends during its lifetime, with many of them originating from sites outside of flipanim, like DeviantArt, or on YouTube. Since this website was sheltered and used by younger users, who often couldn't have other social media, trends would start after they had ended on other sites, and would last longer.
There are two different types of trends that I will be going over.
One and done trends: These happened once or twice and weren't brought up again. They might have been a meme on a different platform, or a fun idea, but they weren't used much at all after the meme died down.
Ongoing trends: These trends are not dead, and often come back in waves. Things like MTAs, where you post about yourself and who you are, often come back and are updated and posted often still.

LinkThese will not be in any sort of order date wise, So I will put the post date of the anims in each of the comments about them.

The "Avatar" Trend was a trend where people would draw their personas, ocs, or profile pictures to match the "default" avatar. They would be drawn in a black outline, with them being colored and often animated with a sketchy yellow background. This trend is an ongoing trend, and is still occasionally practiced, but not as much as it used to be when flipanim was more active.

The "Overrated, Deserving, Underrated" Trend was where a user would make a post asking their followers if they deserved the amount of followers they had, deserved more, or had too many. Their followers would comment whether they thought that their art deserved more followers, or if they had enough.

The "Comment for friend, Like for crush" Trend was where a user would post an anim, usually with them drawing the comment button or like button, and would ask their followers to like their post if they had a crush on them, or to comment if they thought of the poster as a friend. They were often posted jokingly, and people would often like the posts just to troll the people who posted them.

The "Mordetwi" trend was originally an offsite trend where people would ship Twilight Sparkle from My little Pony, Friendship is Magic and mordecai from the Regular Show. The trend would feature people posting Twilight Sparkle and Mordecai singing Airplanes as a duet, usually with a line down the middle dividing them. This trend started picking up on flipanim after the trend had been up for a while on other sites, and after the meme died, it was rarely ever posted about again.

The "who do you ship me with?" was when a user would post asking about it, usually drawing their persona asking who their followers shipped their account, sona, or themselves with. This would usually follow with their followers choosing people who they regularly converse with, or would troll the user by commenting people they hated, or making up people or things.

"Wwyd if I met you" was a version of the WWYD trends, where people would make up scenarios to roleplay with. The poster would often times draw how they thought they looked in real life and would ask people what they would do if they ended up meeting in real life. Sometimes people would answer these questions regularly, where others might use this as a prompt to roleplay with the poster. Some people would troll the poster by making jokes about kidnapping or killing the poster.

This trend was based on Undertale, where a poster would draw their character or persona with a few of the Undertale buttons, such as act, spare, kill, or flirt. Some people would roleplay with followers based on what action they chose against the poster's character.

The "Ramen-Chan" Trend was where people would draw a circular head with a dripping halo. The posters of it would make their own character, a circular one, with a halo and often sporting eyelashes. The background was almost always a pastel color. The original poster was a user named Ramen-Chan, who posted the rules for the trend and the first instance of it on flipanim.

"What does my art taste like?" was a trend where someone would make a post, usually drawing their character or writing the question on the post, would ask their followers what they thought their art would taste like. People would comment things like colors, foods, or things inedible to troll the original poster.

The "MTA" Trend, or "Meet the Author," is a trend where a user will post art, usually depicting a persona or a drawing of what they look like in real life along with their age, gender, sexuality, likes, dislikes, and anything else they put in with it. People would often update and post new ones during their time on flipanim. These trends are still ongoing, and people still post MTAs to this day.

The space milk trend was a trend where people would do their best to replicate the "Space milk," being a glass/see through container with planets, stars, and other galaxy themed things inside. There is at least one anim that has been featured that was a part of this trend.

The friendship level posts are still ongoing and start with a poster drawing different colors/levels, usually starting at green and going down to red with different words written on each one, usually going from Inspo/Crush to Hate you/Do not interact. Followers or other people could comment and get a color that corresponded to how the poster felt towards that person.

"How old do you think I am" Is a trend where people will post asking how old their followers think they are. Followers usually post what age they think they are. Some of the posters would give hints on their age until their followers guessed it correctly, while others wouldn't give any indication either way. Some people would troll and comment obscenely high or low numbers.

The "Stretch" trend was a trend around 2021 where people would draw a character or their persona stretching. Some people would use this trend to draw questionable art of their characters, and it was soon forgotten about.

The touch chart is an ongoing trend that has been around the site for years. It's usually drawn with a user's persona or character with different colors signifying how comfortable they are with different people touching them and where, usually dependent on how close they are.
Flipanim art theft drama:
Flipanim's dealt with it's fair share of art controversy, especially during its early years. I'm going to try to cover a few different types of this art drama.
Tracing/Oc stealing drama: These kinds of drama include people who had been accused of being heavily inspired by other's ocs or outright stealing them. This also goes with Tracing, where people would obviously trace other's art, or become heavily inspired by posing or design without crediting the original poster.
(Epicgamerdude1234, 2019)
A lot of the people that got exposed for tracing, getting heavily inspired by other's ocs or outright stealing them would often accuse the original poster of being the thief. Epicgamerdude1234, for example, accused the original artist that they copied from, animationstation, of being the thief.
(MIA-IS-NOT-TRACER, 2019)
Some people would try tracing for attention, accusing others of tracing as well for attention. Whether some of these accounts are just troll accounts or if they wanted attention, it's hard to say, but most of the older tracers quit shortly after joining flipanim
https://flipanim.com/anim=vpE51Ynl#comment-40jQReGxDV90
It is rather likely that most of these posts have come from people's alt accounts, reposting files to get more attention put on their own art. Along with the accounts having lineart that was almost completely 1:1 to the original posts, they often times have messed up faces or scribbled on colors just to make them look "worse" or like they were done by a way worse artist
(InfernoTheFox, 2019)
InfernoTheFox was highly known in the flipanim community for stealing art, tracing, and a myriad of other art theft crimes. They were known as a type of art thief called a "File snatcher," where they'd look for posts with files linked in them, remove the watermarks or refuse to credit the original people and would post it as their own. They were also known to be a troll while they were active, lying and just being a nuisance to the art community on flipanim.
(GIitterNation, 2018)
GIitterNation was a user that was made once Glitternation got popular, replacing the L with a capital I to try and make it look the same. They would try to impersonate Glitternation occasionally, drawing Glitternation's oc in an attempt to pass their account off as a real second account. After a while, they ended up leaving, much to the relief to the original glitternation fans
(XxGlitterNationxX, 2018)
Glitternation's original character was extremely popular in the early days of flipanim, and because of this, there is a fair share of tracers and people who tried to claim the character for themselves on this site. XxGlitterNationxX fell into the former category. After tracing Glitternation's art and posting only a handful of times, they left the site and haven't posted again since.
(Illogical, 2023)
While Flipanim is usually a self contained website and social media, there are times where it has bled out and shown up on sites like YouTube, or the art from it has been posted elsewhere. In this instance, someone from the sketchers United site had traced both Zyerex's art, and WhyYouSuck's art, removing the watermarks and posted it as their own. Fortunately, the account was suspended, and the art thief apprehended.
(poprocks35, 2021)
User LycanrockMidnight reported that someone had been tracing their art, leading to people discovering this account based on stolen art. Their main oc, "Poprocks," had been drawn using a base that they stole without permission. In the comments, they were obviously trolling and messing around with anyone who commented about the tracing, making it obvious they were doing it to boost their account and get attention.
Other drama:
Flipanim is no stranger to non art related drama. Whether it's petty spats that should have stayed private to people getting caught doing things that would have gotten them put on a list if they had posted it anywhere else, this site is known for always being in one kind of drama or another.
I'll be covering a few different times of non art-related drama, including:
Inappropriate actions by flipanim users to others, whether it's inappropriate relationships, inappropriate art of users or ways that they act that they should not.
Off-site behavior being addressed onsite. If someone was caught doing something like being inappropriate via text message, or admitting something terrible on a different social media site, if any is found, it will be put here.
Infamous Users:
Flipanim has had its rise and fall, and pretty much from the start there was always someone being idolized, and someone being hated. Being infamous is a double edged sword on this site, especially with the moderation being as lax as it is. Because of this, popular users have committed their fair share of bad takes and inappropriate actions, and trolls have gotten away with just about anything.
(Glitternation, 2024)
Glitternation was one of the most infamous original users. The large amount of featured animations along with the iconic design of their mainly used character, Flitter, they were often the target to fanart, tracers, fake accounts, and hoaxes. Because of their large presence, it was easy for things like them being rude to easily get out of hand. Many of their followers would copy their behavior during the time that they were active.
They were often rude to others that they didn't like during this time, causing and picking fights. Because of their popularity, things like this were often ignored, or sometimes, this behavior was even supported by the people that idolized them. They would also sometimes joke and sometimes just say hompphobic things outright. They seemed to have something against the LGBTQ during the time they were active early on as well, as they would sometimes misgender people, or call them by their dead names. There were also times that they would call others slurs, such as the R slur and sometimes the N word. Their fans would often overlook these kinds of behaviors, or would outright defend them during this time.
Glitternation got in their fair share of controversy during their time being active on flipanim. Their other problematic behaviors such as drawing nsfw material of minor's ocs, or ocs that were minors and posting it publicly, and also talking and joking about nsfw materials with their fans is what drove them to eventually leave, deleting most posts except for featured ones, and one about their document talking about their time on flipanim and apologizing for their actions.

Dorothyxscarecrow.
This user on flipanim was one that was both popular and terrible at the same time. Unlike users like Glitternation, Nicole, or other young people on flipanim who had simply grown up on the internet and made mistakes, DxS was known for being extremely problematic and doing things that have been seen as unforgivable in a lot of flipanim user's eyes.
DxS Was an open Zoophile during their time on flipanim, meaning that they had an attraction to animals, the same way someone might have an attraction to a partner or a fellow person. This kind of thinking or being is extremely bad for a myriad of reasons. Animals don't know any better, and unlike humans, can't say if they want to or not. As a human, people should know better than to initiate inappropriate things with animals. This kind of thinking should have therapy involved instead of showing it off and acting like it is a normal thing.
Because this took place before flipanim removed the register button, this user has a multitude of alts.

There are a lot of users that would defend them during this time, or were in denial about their actions.
https://flipanim.com/anim=8zj57jhi
They have also been said to have tried to murder and take advantage of someone, which was later found out to be a lie and was actually their alt account. They would often switch accounts, seen above, to try and avoid getting in trouble, but would often be the one to stir up trouble themselves. The attached anime has screenshots of some of their old posts, such as ones talking about zoophile pride and other art that appears to be heavily inspired by someone else's art style.
From the art theft, to the grooming and lying, they were definitely hated and judged until the day they left, and are still seen as one of the worst people who was ever on flipanim. To this day, if you look up DxS, you will find a myriad of posts containing screenshots and proof of horrible things they have done. I have linked all of the posts I used to write this on this chain, so I highly recommend checking them out yourself for more detailed explanations and proof of what they've been accused of doing.
There are also posts where it was proven that CreativeUsername was in kahoots with DorothyxScarecrow, even going to lengths to support them when they were under fire for grooming, being a zoophile, and refusing to change in any way. Later on, they ended up taking a break because of their interest in animals as well, having been exposed for being a zoophile.
BitterSweetle was an artist on flipanim who had an interest in a show called south Park, a show that centers around a bunch of children. He has mentioned numerous times throughout his time on flipanim that he was close to being a legal adult during his time on flipanim, making this art depicting the children of the south Park show more disturbing and weird.
Multiple users have come up front to talk about the weird things this user had done to them, such as online dating when one side was far younger than him, making his actions even weirder.

infamous person from the early days of flipanim. typical tween, sans/naruto fangirl. switched accounts and left soon after. lied and claimed they had been banned, but to this day they remain unbanned. no ban text on the profile at all. No idea why they lied about this.

has many featured anims, mostly does realism. Gotten into hot water by people who hate realism/think it's uncreative/accused of tracing. he was accused of being transphobic, but has since said that it was a misunderstanding, and worded something really wrong.

This person had a character called valafar, who they shipped in unhealthy relationships with other people's characters. They asked for the anims to get deleted, and they did, including featured ones. This is one of the few instances of featured anims getting deleted, with another user being fuzzy-wuzzy. this post has a couple images of their more popular featured anims before they got deleted.
https://web.archive.org/web/20191004054316/http://flipanim.com/profile?name=Nichole
There are archived versions of their account on the wayback machine, but it is incomplete, and it is still hard to find images of their posts.
https://web.archive.org/web/20190211075517/http://flipanim.com/anim=IAoGCx8s
One of their archived posts mentions them moving to a different account, and on that account they expressed a wish for flipanim to fully delete their posts, which is what happened.
https://flipanim.com/profile?name=fuzzywuzzy
This user was known for their oc, a white cat that was often portrayed as having colorful splotches of paint. There is a featured post with art of their oc. There is still many posts up with fan art of their character. Even though all of their posts are deleted, they have a featured star next to their name, meaning they reached out to the owner of the site to have it personally removed.
banned users:
users that i know little to nothing about what they did/why they were banned, just that they were.
"ban": people would claim to be banned as a way of quitting, or leaving the account. It would usually say "I am banned," "banned," or "__ is banned." The most infamous example is STPM (Sans the pun master), though while I was researching banned users I have found multiple instances of people claiming to be banned as a way of quitting. This seems to have been a trend that was done years ago (~4 years) and hasn't been done at all recently.
Flipanim removes posts that are offensive and doesn't give a reason for banning, meaning that archiving or finding out what people have done to get banned is almost impossible to find, especially if people didn't talk about it. Because of the deletion of offensive posts, there will often be accounts that are banned that have no comments or posts.
Flipanim's old editor was claimed to be removed by Flipanim because he couldn't keep up the new editor (called the beta editor at the time) and the old editor. Many speculate this is actually because there was an exploit where people could add images from the web that weren't flipanim files, causing a myriad of accounts to be banned for posting Gorey or nsfw images, or just using the exploit to post offsite art. Some accounts still have profiles that are off-site images, such as seanacoletta, having a profile picture that seems to be a real life photo.
A lot of people on flipanim are often lonely and try to seek close friendships with others on this site, but some people try to go a step too far and get into a relationship. There are a few things that make ideas like this bad, especially since a lot of the people on this site are minors, and it's often hard to age check people. this has caused a lot of fights to break out, and people to end up being exposed later for acting in inappropriate ways to minors. If you look on this site, it is not uncommon to find one drama or another about a breakup, or someone getting exposed for being problematic or abusive.
The register button used to be on flipanim, and would work by someone using their Facebook account to then make a flipanim account. You could not make an account that had the same name as someone else, and you could not change the name of the account once you had it. During one of Flipanim's updates, however, the register button was removed. There are many theories as to why, such as flipanim wanting to stop people from making alts, trying to get rid of the people who would exploit and basically break the website, and just not wanting to moderate and check in on the site often. To this day, while Flipanim has been active and featured anims, there has been no official statement on why the feature button is not useable.
https://web.archive.org/web/20170616184159/https://flipanim.com/register
According to this archive, it has also made it clear that there have been many changes to the register button. In the earlier days, it asked for an email to create an account, while during later years it would require you to have a Facebook account to be able to create a flipanim account, thus locking some earlier users out of making new accounts.
Featured posts can be 18+, however they do not show up on the top bar. Because they are also not able to be searched for easily, 18+ posts are extremely hard to find.
Featured posts can also be deleted, but only through contacting flipanim themself. Flipanim accounts like nicole's, an early flipanim user's, do not show their featured posts anymore, though they still have the featured stars showing on their account. This means that these featured stars are either permanent, showing even once the anims are deleted, or that flipanim is instead privatizing the posts, leaving the stars even though the posts are now longer visible to the public.
Posts are often referred to as "anims," a shortened version of the word animation, and referring to the name of the website.
Chaining is a term used for when someone comments on another person's comment, even though their comment adds nothing to what the first person was saying or when the person replying seems to be making their own comment unrelated. It's also used to describe long "chains" of comments, where a lot of people are replying to the same comment. It is most often seen happening under early featured posts.
???: some of these are drama but I'm not sure if they should be involved in this. I am trying to keep most of these impersonal as possible, so I am not sure if they should be here.
I will only be covering publicly available dramas for this, seeing as some of these seem to be somewhat personal, though as to why they were posted publicly instead of handled privately, I have no idea why. If you see something about yourself on this chain and want it removed, leave a comment below, and I will look into removing it. Just know that even if something gets removed from this chain, if it is posted publicly, it was available for the public to see.
Removing:
If you own an account here, you can ask to have information about you removed on this chain. Even if a comment about you gets removed on this document however, it will still be on the internet and on flipanim, and your digital footprint will not be removed by doing so. I am simply documenting what others have to say. I am not digging things up on people to get them in trouble, or trying to expose people's past behaviors, I am instead trying to find things that have defined flipanim or have been turning points in its history.
https://web.archive.org/web/20190211075517/http://flipanim.com/anim=IAoGCx8s
This snapshot has a preset icon that is now not in recent flipanim pages. Upon clicking on it, you would be taken to the beta editor, the newer editor at the time. This new editor would include layers, a button to move your drawings, and more. This snapshot includes a new gone tool, the "pen tool," a tool people used to simulate pen pressure or write in cursive. People were saddened greatly when it was removed.
There is also a second button that is now removed that would erase an entire stroke instead of just part of it. This was a worse version of the undo button, which already existed, so it was removed, probably because of its redundancy.
The redo button is also missing in this version of the beta editor, meaning that there was not a way to redo something once you undid it.
https://web.archive.org/web/20190529065917/https://flipanim.com/betaold
you could also find the editor by adding betaold to the end of the website url, causing you to be taken to the early version of the beta editor. This version has red text from the creator saying that he decided to keep the editor due to popular demand from the users.
