its like you adopt the animal(s)/person(s) etc in the drawing. if the creator says something along the lines of yours, you can have them, etc, then they are now yours to trade, draw, etc. they're basically your oc you didnt make. some adopts are things you have to work for. for example, an 'ota', or, an 'offer to adopt'. these are adoptable that you have to offer art, a custom (an animal/person etc you specifically make for that person) or another oc of yours to adopt them. its a trade. but, you have to both agree on the trade. a 'dta', or, a 'draw to adopt' means you have to draw the character up for adoption in order to adopt it. then the creator will decide if they want to give the adopt to you or not. there are also 'nta'. 'nta' means 'name to adopt'. you name the character(s) you see and if the creator likes the names you gave them and agree you may have the adopts they're yours.

two more things you should probably know: 'fcfs' means 'first come first serve'. if the title of an animation it means the character below is up for adoption and the first person to comment gets the adoptable. once they say 'yours', you have ownership of the adoptable. 'nfcfs' means 'not first come first serve'. this still means you have to comment to get the adoptable, but it doesnt guarantee you will obtain ownership of the character. the owner will decide. one last thing: some people are very specific and have rules they'll tell you before you adopt an adoptable. for example, one of the most common rules is that you have to draw the character you adopted. some people say draw them at least once, some people say more, etc. or they might say 'just please use them'. this means u can draw them, roleplay with them, etc, they just want you to use the character(s) they made. so yeaa!! sorry that was so long. hope this provided some explanation!
