It was a warm and sunny day in the village of Odayakana, and the birds were singing from the warn luscious trees that grew overhead. A small girl named Elisa was picking strawberries from a nearby bush. ‘What a beautiful day’,she thought to herself. When she had gotten enough strawberries in her pink basket, she skipped home to show mother all the sweet strawberries she had picked. “Look mother!” the girl cried as she ran into the house, “look how many strawberries I have picked! We can eat them for dinner!”. No reply. “Mother?” the girl said as she walked into the kitchen to find her mother gone. “How strange!” Elisa exclaimed, “she never leaves without notifying me first!” The village of Odayakana did not believe in new fangled smartphones,so none of the village had any phone except a landline with a cord. Elisa frowned as she looked around the house, hoping she would find her mother sitting on the sofa with a book in hand. ‘Wherever could she be?’ the girl thought, now worried.

She stepped outside and walked over to her neighbors house, still clutching her basket full of fresh strawberries. She knocked once at the door, then twice, then a third. “How peculiar!” the girl said to herself. Suddenly she noticed a ruffle of the bushes behind her. “H-hello?” she said with a wobble in her voice. No reply. A shiver slid down her spine. Someone was watching her. Elisa sobbed as a tear rolled down her cheek. Where was everyone? Was she getting spied on? Why? She had so many questions, but nobody to answer them.

A while later,Elisa was in her bed, crying buckets of tears. Was she going to be alone forever? ‘No.’ She thought to herself ‘I won't let whoever did this get away with it!’ The girl rushed to her old oak wardrobe and opened the doors. The wardrobe creaked as she opened it. Elisa began rummaging through her wardrobe, but she couldn’t find a single outfit that wasn’t a dress. For a moment she debated wearing her current clothes, but the pink and white dress was already beginning to itch. In a moment of doubt,Elisa tore her oldest dress and fixed the top to her chest, while using the rest of the fabric to make a quick pair of trousers with her sewing kit. Elisa loved to sew,and she spent most of her time sewing. She had sewn trousers before, but had donated them. Once the trousers were finished she tugged them on and grabbed her backpack. She packed her book and her battery powered light into the bag and rushed downstairs to find some non-perishable food.

She stared into the fridge and her eyes darted this way and that to find some food to bring with her. Who knew how long she would be gone for? She certainly didn't. She packed 2 weeks of food just to be safe, and shoved her basket full of ripe strawberries from earlier on top of all her supplies. She looked around her house and grabbed the keys that sat on the table. As she walked out the door, she smiled. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew one thing for sure, she was going to do this.

As Elisa steeped outside, she still felt a pair of eyes on her. “You can’t scare me,” she said, even though deep down she was terrified. Once she had passed her garden, the feeling of people watching her went away and she realised she had absolutely no idea where to go. Elisa thought back to one lesson of homeschooling, where mother had taught her how to find the time that something had been done. She tried hard to remember all the details of the lesson. “Check for clues,” mother had said, “look for things that have been changed since you last saw them”. Clues. She needed to find clues. The small girl looked around to try and find some. She remembered that she had gone into the grass field earlier today and there was a bike with a punctured wheel abandoned there. Chances where if the bike wasn’t still there, she was on the right path.

She rushed to the grass field that was about 10 minutes from where she currently was. With all this time to think, she began to doubt herself. ‘No,I said I was going to do this,so I will.’ the girl regained her confidence. She wondered where everyone was right now. Was mother scared? The little girl was adamant she was. Elisa began to answer her own questions. Were they all together? Probably not. Elisa hoped that mother was okay. She wondered if her dad was looking down at her from heaven. She hoped he was proud of her. Before Elisa knew it,she was at the grassy field. As she looked across the field there was no sign of a bike, but there was a letter.

Elisa rushed over to the letter and opened it,her fingers trembling. This felt like a horror movie. She wondered if someone was going to jump out behind her and stab her. She looked around and was reassured when she saw the field was completely empty. The letter had been written on an old receipt streaked with mud, but she could still make out the words scribbled on with a pencil. The handwriting was messy and big,but that was the least of her worries, because the letter read: ‘Hey little girl, let’s play tag’
