My conversation with Ezra earlier is still confusing me, but that’s nowhere near my biggest concern right now. Right now, all of my concentration needs to be focussed on the obstacle ahead of me, stopping the Coast Buster from getting in a shipwreck. If only I had Nicole’s talent for controlling the sea; but the wind will have to do. Even though most people would find it heavy, my spellbook feels as light as an empty water bottle in my hand, probably because I use it so much. Huh. I guess trying to top a shipwreck with a spellbook using my wind powers is making me think of water, as I am in the middle of an ocean. Whatever, I just have to get the job done before people get hurt. Shouldn’t be too hard since there’s a nice breeze at hand. That’s good. Wait, no. My mind really needs to shut up and not give me possible false hope. This could be a

potential shipwreck; I can’t say that there’s anything good about it because there isn’t. Giving myself a little shake to block out those thoughts, I begin the spell I need. I harness the wind then begin to chant, thunder rolling and lightning crackling around me. “Taranis, god of the storm; I ask for your help in every form. “Calm the wind, ground the energy into the air, earth and sea; send this storm away from me. “And if thy God does agree then manifest please make it be.” When I finish the chant, I look up nervously, hoping that it worked. Praying to Morrigan that it worked. I can’t bear the thought that she didn’t agree. So many passengers are on that cruise; so many will get hurt or even killed if she refuses. To my relief, the storm instantly starts to die down. The wind settles down just after steering the ship back on track, the waves stop rolling, the lightning stops crackling every second, the thunder doesn’t rumble because there’s no more lightning, the sun peeks out from behind the cl

clouds, and the rain stops pouring down. It brings a rare smile to me. My witchcraft succeeded, lives were saved, and my identity is still a secret. I don’t mind that they’ll never find out that I’m the one who saved them. As part of the coven, I need to remain a secret so that witch hunters don’t find me and everyone else. Can’t let the Salem Witch Trials happen again. What a nightmare that would be, being chased by witch hunters and the terrible possibility of being burned at the stake or hanged. I shudder and try to think of something else, anything else. Then I freeze, thinking that I sense somebody watching me. But who could be? The only other people around are on the cruise, and those people don’t know I’m here or that I even exist. So who is it? I whip around, hoping to find somebody. At least then I’ll know there is somebody and that my senses aren’t going bonkers. Instead of some random person I’ve never met watching me, the person I see is somebody I know, even if I only met him today. But what is

he doing here? “Ezra?” I ask in disbelief. “Hey, EV,” he replies casually, as if it’s perfectly normal to be in the middle of the ocean on a tiny deserted island watching somebody use witchcraft to save a ship. “Nice spell you did there. Maybe you could teach me it sometime?.” I laugh at the absurdity of that. “What even is your element? Only witches with the wind element can do it, unless you happen to be one of the few that is strong with every element.” I doubt he is. There’s barely any of them. Ezra grins a bit and says, “And what if I am? I just finished Training, and they said that I’m strong with every element.” he doing here? “Ezra?” I ask in disbelief. “Hey, EV,” he replies casually, as if it’s perfectly normal to be in the middle of the ocean on a tiny deserted island watching somebody use witchcraft to save a ship. “Nice spell you did there. My jaw drops at that. I’m standing in front of a person who can perform Magick of every element with ease. “Really? Well, then, I guess I might have to teach it to you.” At the hopeful look in his eyes, I add, “Not sure when that will be, though. You still have to go through the process of initiation, and that could take a while.” Then I think of something else. “How did you get here, anyway?” He just shrugs as if this is a normal, everyday question. “Luke teleported me, why?” “Um, maybe because that’s the only way to get here, and based on the time you got here, he would’ve had to do it in front of the school. Isn’t it lunch time right now? Yeah? Okay, so he would’ve had to do it in front of the entire seventh grade, and we’re not supposed to use our Magick in front of other people. Why did you even come? It could’ve endangered the coven!” “Well, he took me somewhere nobody would see us, so we didn’t do it in front of anybody, let alone the entire grade.” He pauses for a moment, tilting his head to the si

side and considering something, then shaking his head. His strawberry blonde locks seem to be like a flickering flame in the soft sea breeze. I’d reach out to brush it away from his face, but that would be awkward on numerous levels. Instead, I wait for him to continue speaking. “And I came because… well, I’m actually not sure why, but I like the decision.” I raise one of my eyebrows at that, but I don’t question him any further. Weird. I’m usually the detective who figures out all the mysteries, so why am I not trying right now? I guess it doesn’t really matter at the moment. I’ll figure it out later. “Okay then. Doesn’t make much sense, but whatever.” My response only causes Ezra to grin even wider. Of course it does. What is there that doesn’t make him grin? Too little. Sometime he’s gonna have to learn that there’s a time for joking around and stuff like that and there’s a time for being serious. The sooner the better, I say. But for now, I’ll let him grin. I sigh at that, exasperated, and turn aroun

around, starting to walk away. But a hand on my arm stops me in my tracks just before I end up in the water. Turning around, I face him and ask, “What?” “Nothing, just that… well, nevermind.” Ezra shakes his head as if he’s trying to clear it and then grins again. He really needs to cut it out already. I roll my eyes and walk away from him and into the water. I summon a gust of wind to carry me to my home. But then he stops me again, this time just with words. Weird. That’s never happened to me before. But I quickly realize it isn’t Ezra. And why don’t I recognize this voice? I finally recognize the voice when I whip back around. When my eyes land on him, I instantly groan. Just my rotten luck that I have to deal with him. He tsks with his tongue as if I should know better. “Now, now, Evelyn Victoria. Is that any way to treat an old friend?” “You’re not my friend, and you never have been, idiot.” Ezra edges closer to me and whispers in my ear, “Do you know that guy?” When I nod, he tilts his head to t

Ezra edges closer to me and whispers in my ear, “Do you know that guy?” When I nod, he tilts his head to the side, as if he’s asking how. The guy I’m about to fight notices. “Who’s that, EV?” he asks, gesturing to Ezra. “Why do you care, Derick?” I fire back. He glares at me, so I smirk at him. Anything to irritate him. “Selling more secrets to the witch hunters?” Derick Fenton was one of my allies, but he turned on the coven. He delivered our secrets to the witch hunters, thinking it would give him money, glory, and honor throughout the country. It didn’t. But he still remains our enemy. He betrayed us once, he could do it again. So we refuse to let him back into the coven, and now he fights us with his own Magick. Magick like Ezra’s, but his is tainted with darkness now, now that he is a Dark Witch. Ezra looks between us in shock. He probably didn’t expect that we were standing in front of a spy, which is understandable. I probably wouldn’t have expected it, either. Derick laughs at the idea of sellin

selling more secrets to the witch hunters. He shouldn’t. I was being serious, and he has done it before. “Who, me?” he asks innocently, or as close to innocent as he can get. Whatever that is. “Yeah, you. Haven’t you heard the story of how a Dark Witch named Derick Fenton betrayed my coven? Oh, wait, you don’t need to. After all, you’re that Dark Witch.” I think I got him pretty good there. Not sure, though. It’s not like I exactly have a you-got-’em-pretty- good detector. Although that would be cool. But just judging by his expression, I definitely hit him hard. Good. Now if I just keep at it, I’ll have more time to plan a battle strategy, my powers will be less drained from so much usage, and he’ll be weakened for the battle. “What caused you to do that, anyway? Did you want glory? Honor? Riches? Or were you just upset that you didn’t become High Priest and instead it’s Luke?” He growls at the mention of Luke. I guess it’s because of the High Priest thing, then. That sucks. Maybe he still would be on our

side if it weren’t for his stupid obsession with becoming the High Priest. I really need to stop thinking of maybes instead of answers. “Shut up, Wagner!” yells Derick. He’s definitely not past that grudge yet. He probably never will be. Whatever, it’s idiotic and he needs to stop. If he doesn’t I swear I’ll eat a rock. Or rather, finish the rock I started eating last time I said something like this; it’s only half finished. “Do you really want me to skewer you?” “Depends. Will I think that it’s worth it?” I ask, tilting my head to the side as if I’m just asking him a regular question like what he predicts the weather forecast will be for Wednesday, which is tomorrow. “Probably not for you, but it would be for me,” he says. “Hmm, then my answer is… no.” I crack my knuckles real quick and add, “Okay, now make my job easy for me and let me drag you back to the hideout for interrogation.” My knuckle-cracking clearly unnerves him. I can tell because he shudders at the sight and cringes. Also, he definitel

definitely isn’t about to make my job easy for me. Bummer. “Why would I do that? I came here for a fight, and that’s what’s gonna happen. Unless you’re too scared to do it?” Great, I completely forgot that he always taunts people no matter what. That sucks because it means we have something in common, only that I only taunt him. He does it to them all. I snort at the idea that I’d be too scared to fight him. Yeah, right. It’s more likely that Trump will be a good president. In my opinion, that means that it’s completely impossible. Who ever heard of Trump being a good president? Back to the point. There’s no way that I will ever, ever in a million years be scared to fight him. After his betrayal, it’s one of the only few things I want. Ezra looks between the two of us nervously, but then he straightens up and gets ready to fight. Weird that he can go from one person to a completely different one in the same few seconds. But I can’t worry about that now because we have a Dark Witch to fight. Or rather, I

have a Dark Witch to fight. He betrayed me more than any of the rest of us, and Ezra doesn’t even have a score to settle with him. Besides, there is absolutely no way that a rookie is about to fight Derick. He’s too dangerous for that even if the rookie can control every single element. I won’t let him and he knows it. But I don’t think he cares. I don’t care if he doesn’t care about it, there is no way he is going to fight Derick Fenton. He’s nowhere near ready. He may have finished the Trainee level, but he still has to go through his Apprenticeship. Only Apprentices about to become witches or members who already are witches are qualified to fight him. Ezra can not try to do this, no matter how much he might want to or think he has to. He doesn’t have to, and even though he wants to, he will stay behind me and out of range of Derick’s fire or my tornadoes. That’s final, and he can tell that I’ve made up my mind and there’s no changing it now. Good, he’s not an idiot. Because being an idiot can get him kil

killed. Derick strides toward us, gathering up his Magick into fireballs that look lethal enough that you’d die if you even smell them too much. When I notice that, I give Ezra a pointed look that he knows means to get behind me and not even try to fight. He obeys, and just in time because Derick sends the first fireball toward where he had been just a moment earlier. That was way too close. I retaliate by gathering as much wind as possible into a Magick tornado, which I send in Derick’s direction. But it doesn’t reach him. He sends out a bunch of minions to do his dirty work for him, who end up caught in my whirlwind that was meant for Derick. Darn. I would much rather have gotten him instead. Knowing what I’m probably thinking, he smirks at me, trying to taunt me into doing it (and failing) again just to prove that I can. I won’t allow that, but since I missed, I’ll have to try again, this time using a completely different approach. This time, I guide the wind in a direction that will knock him off his fe

first. When that works, I then send my whirlwind his way, which propels him up into the air in dizzying circles. Ezra watches me at work, mesmerized by my Magick and how much control I have over it. Funny, for a guy who can control every element he seems to not know much about witchcraft. But then again, the program we operate does things differently than the rest of the Magickal and Witchy Community. It makes sense that he’s confused. Before I go back to fighting Derick, I notice something about Ezra. Something he quickly puts a barrier around when he realizes that I noticed. But I still saw it, and I know that he’s trying really hard to hide it. I briefly wonder what it could be, but I remind myself to focus on fighting Derick and nothing else. So I do. I even manage to block out Ezra, or at least the closest thing to that that I can do. Which really isn’t that much, but whatever. I open my spellbook and quickly scan over a page on a fighting spell. Okay, so all I need to do is harness my element, use i

it to keep him still and stuck where he is, and then send some sort of tornado or whirlwind or whatever in his direction, which will then propel him up into the air, somehow block out his fire, and make sure he isn’t able to fight. Should be pretty easy. Hopefully. I really, really, really need to stop having such wishful thinking. It could get me or the entire coven killed at some point, and we can’t have that. Ever. Well, okay, we’re all gonna die at some point, but I won’t let my faults be the cause of everyone else’s downfalls. Why are we ever born if we’re all gonna die someday? It’s a waste, if you ask me. But nobody ever asks me about anything. I’m used to it. Nobody ever has, and probably nobody ever will. But I need to stop rambling, so I’ll shut up and go back to fighting Derick. The said opponent is back up from the ground, heading toward me. Well, he’s running if we wanna be specific, but same thing. He has his arms up, but I’m not dumb enough to think that it’s in surrender. He’s actually sen

sending a very lethal looking fireball in my general direction. It’s a good thing that he has terrible aim, because if his aim was good I would be dead now that it’s whizzing right past me. In retaliation, I use the spell that I was looking at not that long ago. I point my index finger on my dominant hand (my left hand) at him while chanting the spell under my breath but steadily getting louder. “Blessed Winds, Gale and Breeze; Create a whirlwind, please; One that knocks him to his knees. Gentle Winds that swiftly blow, grant my desire; Please make it so!” To give the spell extra power I flick my wrist and spin my left index finger in a quick spiral. Fortunately, my spell works like a charm. In a flash a dust devil forms on the island and heads toward Derick to knock him down and restrain him. Naturally, I grin at this, only partly because he’s at my mercy. Mostly because my spell worked. Also, I’m always happy when I see something to do with the wind. Y’know, because it’s my element, and I love wind? What

Whatever, it happened and I succeeded. And now I walk over to him trying to decide whether or not to interrogate him. If I do interrogate him, I also need to decide whether or not to do it with the coven. I should probably do it with them. So that’s what I decide to do. “Ezra, help me get him to the hideout. We’re gonna interrogate him with the coven.” We walk up to Derick, matching each other stride for stride, and start hauling him toward the water. But then we realize that there’s a fault in this plan. “Hey, uh, EV?” he asks, running his left hand through his hair, maybe trying to think of an idea as he does so. “How do we plan on getting all three of us there? Luke isn't here to teleport us, that cruise is long gone even if we could take it, and you have to regain your Magickal strength enough to get us all there. How long will that take?” He tilts his head to the side again. That's honestly really starting to get on my nerves.
