It's not how humans look tho so I'm not going to deal with it if I don't want to Instead of using flat white for highlights, you should try using a more middling color, like using one of the greys with the paint roller. Shading can be quite intense at times and with the right lighting, but never just flat white without any gradient into it. You should also think about where the highest parts of the thing you're shading would be, or use references to make it look less like spandex. References in general are really helpful for anyone drawing ever, no matter how skilled you are

Also, think of how matte colours look. Humans aren't shiny, so highlight with colours closer to the skin than to the colour of the light source.

Not what I'm saying. I'm saying that you shouldn't treat hair as a shiny surface. It's a common issue.
