LinkJeremiah Salem, a game tester for an unnamed company, boots up a beta for the next mascot horror hit. After a run in with the title character, a clearly marketable monster, Jeremiah runs the normal course to the exit and when the animation for the door opening begins to play, You’re pulled from the screen, into the real world, where Jeremiah's chair fell through the floor, and into the real game.
The real game is dimly lit, with liminal spaces being a main inspiration for the level design. Jeremiah is now not just a player but in the real world experiencing this. You can see his body, his arms, him walking, etc etc. Finding a lighter, he lights it and notices a small shadow on the wall (But when he looked behind him, nothing was there.) It was the shadow of a little girl, with pigtails. She asked him, ‘Who are you? How did you make me?’ And the player is given two choices of what to say (1. I don’t know. 2. I made you with a purpose.) When you pick a lie or harmful sentence,

Linkthe girl will trust you more but be a much bigger threat. If you tell the truth and be kind, she will trust you and defend you, but at first she’s incredibly stubborn. Shes the only way for you to access puzzles and keypads, as she travels across different walls and casts her shadow over them to reveal the answer. When you flick off your lighter, she will disappear, but will remember everything once you turn it on again.

LinkA creature called ‘Wretched’ will slowly track you down and peek at you behind corners, doors, etc. It seems to whisper and the girl responds in ways that aren’t very telling. (example : uh-huh, i will, no, i can’t, bye, hello) If you ask, she’ll just respond that Jeremiah should know.
Jeremiah is his own character and has voice lines for everything he inspects, uses, solves, fails, etc. Whenever he dies to the Wretched, he wakes up back at the last slide he found. Going down these slides acts as a save point.

LinkThe shadow girl has multiple hidden bars - Hunger, Happiness, Trust, and Jealousy. In order to raise the hunger stat, you need to collect crayons, which she will ‘consume’ In order to raise Happiness, you need to say the right things, and trust is raised by sticking to your word and finishing an objective you set. Jealousy will automatically raise when you go down slides, solve puzzles without her, or keep crayons in your inventory while she is hungry.
