Yeah Daukius/Toby genuinely thinks it was because of him and that’s the wholeass reason who denies Olympus’s affections, in reality Olympus/James was cut off from his family when he married Toby, and struggled with finding a job and was sort of left at home feeling useless, along with constantly being threatened by a club he was in debt to. With everything else going wrong he denied telling Toby, and ended up developing delusions and convincing himself whenever Toby wasn’t home that he hated him so at that point there felt like there wasnt anything good left to stay for. Whole reason Daukius avoids Olympus because he remembers and Olympus has no memory so he’s just like “haha man that guys fine”
