I'm not sure, my grandparents have certain beliefs so I think they might be trying to keep him until he passes away on his own but the poor thing
If that’s so then make sure when you see him you give him the best life you can while he’s still around, make every good moment count and don’t be too sad, dogs can sense sadness and will act upon it even when them themselves are hurting.
