The day was peaceful, Topaz was enjoying a cup of salted lizards on her bedroom balcony(dragons eat that kind of stuff. I know, gross right?). This was normal and knowing something isn’t going to be normal is going to happen on that normal day made her heart skip and her tail twitch. Ugg… happen already! I’m waiting, world! Oh, the school is waiting, I am waiting, and even my never waiting sister, Sandstorm is waiting! My day is normal, my jewelry is normal, my delectable dish is normal, my balcony, my room, my pets, my garden………..normal. Oh, scales and snakes my little scavenger is acting normal, is that possible?! She thought to herself. Her doors slammed, making her jump like a cat as her sister barged in. Walking around like she owns the place. She snorted as she saw the beautifully decorated cage made for her sister’s pet scavenger.
“Ugh your room smells like a smelly old scavenger's den, I don't see why you don't just gobble it up like a normal dragon,” Sandstorm grunted while fidgeting with the silver lock. Topaz gasped, horrified by the thought. She loved her pets with all her heart. She would never dream of hurting one and almost became a full vegetarian to make sure her cute little scavenger, Fluffy, wouldn't be scared. She flapped her tiny wings as hard as she could and tried to look bigger (which didn't help her due to her small appearance). “Get out!” she barked, wrapping her wings around the cage and hissing defensively.
“Nah I’m good,” Sandstorm said casually, not even looking up as Topaz rattled her barbed tail (That is a sandwing thing, they do it to warn or threaten others). “Oh, Mom wants to go, like now,” Sandstorm remembered. The moment Topaz heard this she wiped around to face her sister’s gleaming black eyes, her own dark chocolate brown eyes went wide.
. “Why didn’t you tell me?!” Topaze squawked, already running about the room looking for last-minute school supplies and jewelry. Her bag was almost as big as her as they left the sandwing palace. Oh wow, oh wow, ohwowohwowohwow!!! I can't wait to go to school! Homeschool is fun, sure but real school is going to be so different, oh wow! Topaz thought as she beat her nimble wings like a hummingbird.
Her sister, on the other hand, was flying like an elegant hawk. Her big, ominous wing beats basically said, don't mess with me pleasantly dragons, I am big, powerful, and deadly. Topaz did a loop of joy in the air, smiling, she thought, Wow, I can't wait to know what being a friend feels like!!.
