Chapter 1 go read now lmt

Chapter 1- Simon The stomping of gigantic footsteps was loud, even if it wasn’t truly stomping. But, it wasn't the loud walking that woke up the borrower, no, he’d grown used to that. It was the bits of isolation that shook free and caused him to sneeze, that woke him up. Simon rubbed at his face, before turning to glare at the wall. The side that was connected to the inside of the human’s house. He huffed, still glaring at the wall and tired from his rude awakening. He only had one, well two questions on his mind as he listened to the human stomp around frantically. And those were: ‘Why in the world was the human awake!’ and ‘Why are they being so LOUD?’ He looked down at his borrowing bag, the things he’d borrowed out of boredom last night splayed about on the floor. Simon looked over the things that had spilled out, listing off each one as he went. Paperclip, needle, bit of leftover cake, a stamp, a pin-

“Wait,” he got off his bed, picking up the large pin. He’d picked it up at random from the human’s collection, he hadn’t meant to take the only one that would be missed. Simon had only wanted a pin to use as a shield, he’d seen a few mice running about outside and wanted to drive them off before they tried getting in the house. If they got in and the human saw them, it would spell out a whole world of trouble for Simon. He’d be better off moving than trying to stay and fend off the mice, all well being on high alert for any traps. And, it wasn’t like he could use the pin and return it, if it had any scratch marks because of mice the human could get suspicious. He didn’t doubt the human would set out traps if the pin was a scratch up. Or worse, call an exterminator.

The borrower looked down at the pin, the picture on it was one of the human with a relative, or maybe a friend of theirs. Simon really didn’t care who the other person was, he just need to get this stupid thing back and get a new pin without being spotted. Swiftly he fashioned the pin to his borrowing bag, and set out of his home and into the walls. The tunnels he’d carved out were twisting and confusing, if you hadn’t made them or been in them before. But Simon knew the tunnels like the back of his hand. Experly, he made his way to the kitchen and to one of his hidden entrances. An outlet that was mostly obscured behind a coffee maker. Simon could hear the human stomping about some other place in the house, possibly the living room from the sound of it. His hands reached for the lowest screw that held the cover in place. Quickly he loosened it, moved the cover to the side, and slipped out of the walls and onto the counter.

When he was out he glanced around, quickly putting the cover back in place to avoid any suspicion; and, unclipped the pin from his bag. He creeped out from behind his cover, his plan was to simply put the pin near the coffee maker. The human used it quite often so it would be found eventually. The stomping steps of the human started getting closer. Simon’s fingers twitched as he quickly put down the pin face down near the coffee maker. Before, scurrying back to his cover. He held his breath as the human entered the room. His mind darted from one thought to another as he listened to the human walk closer. His heart raced quickly. They’d probably seen the pin, and because they hadn’t beforehand they probably would chalk it up to being ‘blind as a bat,’ or whatever. That wasn’t what Simon was worried about. What worried him was the fact that if the human went to either side of the coffee maker he’d be seen.

A heart beat passed, then another, and finally after forever to the borrower, the human left. Quickly he scrambled back into the walls, but he wasn’t done doing stupid risky stuff yet. No, he in truth lived for the adrenaline high of taking unnecessary risks, and he still needed a pin. So the borrower went out again, taking another pin. Making sure it was one of the ones the human had multiple of, for whatever reason. Probably in case they lost it. As he walked through the maze of tunnels in the wall he made a mental list of what he’d need to borrow later. Things that would be too risky- even in his mind- to get until night fell. Paper clips- he was running low on the easily malleable wire. Tin foil- that stuff was always something he needed, as it was so versatile in its uses and he ran out frequently. Batteries- the fairy lights being used in his literal hole in the wall would need replacements soon.

His train of thought came to a screeching halt as he reached the door that led out of the house. Simon drew the needle he carried with him for protection, adjusted the pin accordingly and headed out to face those stupid rodents.
