We moved along the forest trail, kicking rocks to the side as we laughed and chattered. The sunlight barely reached us through the thick forest, but just enough slid through to light our path.
“Oh, cool!” Keith gasped and bent over to pick up what looked to be a cow skull.
“How did that get all the way out here?” I ask, to which Keith shrugs and continues to walk, carrying it under his arm as if it were just a ball. We continued, until we found a clearing. The trees parted to let sunlight hit one small patch of dirt, which held a single leaf- maple, the ones you connect to autumn. Strange, since it’s spring, and the trees around us are pine, the ones we can see at least.
“Weird.” Keith chuckled, “It doesn’t even look like it’s dying.” He put down the skull to pick up the leaf, which was in pristine condition.
“Someones playing a trick on us.” I said, “Park knew we were heading out today and must’ve wanted to freak us out.”
Keith looked at me.
“Bummer. Well, we should head home in case he set up any tra
I sighed in defeat. Park was a clever guy, of course he would set traps. And us, being years younger than him, would fall into them inevitably.
“Sure. But leave the stupid skull, it’s freaking me out.” I flicked my hand at it, as Keith shrugged and put it down and the leaf on top, resting between the skull's eyes.
“Now come on.” I said, leading Keith from the clearing.
We got about 10 steps away from it until a strong gust of wind pushed us back, knocking me off my feet, and keith lost his balance. I groaned, rubbing my head, which landed on the dirt path with a thud. I looked up to keith, who was in shock, looking to the clearing.
“Keith?” I said, slowly turning my head to see what he was looking at.
The wind was carrying maple leaves with it, forming in a circle around the clearing. Keith began to run, walking backwards before going into a sprint. I tried to yell for him, but he was too far by the time I managed to get a word out. The skull raised into the air, before the wind finally settled.
The wind left the clearing, leaving one leaf to hit me in the face. I grabbed it and opened my eyes, to see a person. I think.
They wore the cow skull like a mask, the leaf still placed gently on it. The figure was floating, it’s long black hair still hitting the ground even while it’s feet didn’t. It looked to me, through the skull’s sockets. I scrambled, trying to run. I noticed my left foot was bare- my shoe was knocked into the clearing. I always wore shoes too big for me, my brothers hand me downs. It didn’t matter, and i began running, until I felt a tug on my arm.
I stopped, and slowly, and fearfully, turned around.
The figure had my shoe in it’s hand.
It’s logo was covered in mud before, but now it looked to be brushed off. I relaxed my arm, and slowly faced the creature. It moved it's hand closer to me, to get me to take it. I gingerly took it from it's hand, and put it on. The creature only started, and hadn’t spoke a word. Not one, even when I slowly backed away, then booked it to the edge of the forest.
I remember it stared at me the whole time i ran, even while I couldn’t see it, I could feel it’s eyes on me.
