It's a mix of (from the game Monster Hunter) a Kulu-Ya-Ku, a Pukei Pukei, a Jagra (not a Great Jagra, just a normal one), and a dog. They are a neutral species that are mostly found in the Ancient Forest. They dwell in trees and caves, and they prey on fish, bugs, and small monsters. Some hate the Commission while others only want them to succeed in research. Palicoes can roughly talk to them once they learn Jagra language from the local Bugtrappers (Gremalkynes). They will help you on your expeditions and quests and will protect you with their lives as they are extremely loyal creatures. Beware of ones with metal helms in the shape of dragons, for they serve to kill the elder dragons for bounties and anyone who tries to get strikes in on the magical beasts.
