LinkI met a cute girl at the local Starbucks today. I kind of recognized her from some of my classes, but we’d never talked, and I’d never gotten a good look at her face.
I had come in to study and drink some coffee, plus the idle sounds of the cafe mixing with my music was the perfect atmosphere for any stressed out college kid. I set my things down at a table near an outlet and kept my eyes locked in them until I got up to the counter, where I had to look at the barista’s face. It just so happened to be said cute girl. I felt a bit of heat creep into my ears, both from anxiety about ordering and from kind of recognizing her from class.
“What can I get you?” she said in a tone that sounded like someone who’s dead inside trying to be positive and chipper. I ordered, a latte filled with sugar, and as my card processed, I stared at my feet. I was wearing an old pair of sneakers I had gotten when I was in high school. They were scuffed and brown, and I didn’t really even remember what color they

LinkI didn’t really even remember what color they were originally.
I looked back up at her to complete the transaction and mumbled a thank you. She had shoulder-length dark brown hair, and a smattering of freckles across her face. What stood out most to me was that she was close to my height, an unusual circumstance for a tall guy with girls. I sat and waited for both my drink and my laptop. It took a while to boot, so I sat at the table, watching cute barista girl do her thing.
“Is this weird?” I thought as I noted her plain clothing underneath the green Starbucks uniform. “Probably.” I caught her eye and glanced back to my laptop, ears going hot. It had started up by that point, so I unlocked it and went to work. Actually, it was more like procrastination than work, but the coffee (which had come out shortly after I opened Word) hadn’t hit my system yet, and everyone knows you need caffeine to even stay alive anymore.
About a half hour into messing around in SketchUp and chill, (cont)

Linkand being on my third coffee (this one I had spiked with Red Bull, just to see if I’d die from it, not caring if I did or didn’t), that barista came out from the back and sat down across from me.
“Hi,” she said, dropping the chipper pretense from our first interaction. “I saw you watching me. I’m not stupid. And I’m not doing that essay for you.” I sighed.
“Hi,” was all I said back.
“Look, you’re even blushing right now!” she said with a bit of a laugh.
“Uh, um, er, sorry,” I said, stumbling over the one word I could force out.
“You are such a nerd,” she muttered. She cocked her hand and looked at me, no doubt noting the fact that I looked like a poorly put together quilt of a person. I laughed nervously and looked back at my SketchUp dick. Suddenly it seemed a bit dumb to spend all that time making a sex organ on my laptop instead of doing work.
“I’m really not,” I said, turning my laptop around.
“That’s a very nerd thing to do.” I turned my

LinkI turned my laptop back around and hugged it.
“What’s your name, Mr. Spikes Coffee With More Caffeine?” she asked, looking at the ingredients on the energy drink can.
“Uh, Jesse,” I said, feeling my face flush again.
“So, Jesse. I can tell you like me. For some reason, who even knows. I think everyone can tell.” I blushed more out of embarrassment than anything else. Her eyes lit up with a sort of schadenfreude.
“Shut up!” I stammered, sounding exactly like a poorly written tsundere.
“And I like you. Not in that way. But I’d like to get to know you better. Text me,” she said, and slid a paper toward me. She then slipped back behind the counter and was aback to sounding like a chipper girl as soon as she appeared.
“What just happened,” I breathed as I looked at the piece of paper, a phone number written on it. “Does this mean I’m going to get laid?”
The answer was no, I’m not going to get laid. Her name is Eliza. It feels like we’ve been friends for ye

LinkIt feels like we’ve been friends for years.
But something has been nagging at me about her. It feels like there’s something bad coming, and that I should never have texted her. Almost as if she’s going to be the cause of it.
