If they're faking depression they probably still need your support, even if the cause isn't depression. It's wayyy more likely for genuine depression to be minimized and invalidated rather than faked. Depressed people can smile and laugh and look on the outside like things are fine. For some, depression means not sleeping. For others, oversleeping. Same with under and overeating. Many symptoms aren't observable by anyone. There's no way to definitively say. But I do know that it can be damaging to someone who is genuinely depressed for the validity of their suffering to be questioned.
