The Hollow Eye Virus was born from an experiment to make ponies develop more features. (i.e, Wings, horns.) This idea was created by scientists discovering worms that had been mutating and developing features to help them survive. The scientists took them in, took blood samples, and found the cell that was causing this. Unfortunately, no other animal would produce this cell, and so they began to breed the worms to be able to create more of these cells so they could allow ponies to (hopefully) mutate in ways desired. They put the blood of the worms into a sort of potion, and began their testing.

Unfortunately for the test subjects, the worms carried their eggs in their blood stream, so once consumed, they'd become a host for the worms.

The eggs would cluster at the back on the mouth and one hatched, go through nasal cavity, dig through the flesh to them reach the eye cavity. Once inside, they'd begin to nest inside of the eye, digging holes into it until completely hollow, causing the pony to lose vision, keeping consciousness during the pain of the actions. The eyes become hazy as the first stage of infection begins.
