This tutorial isnt quite about shading, but it shows how I use the paint roller to make things darker and I think could help

Well if you find that one shade of grey I mentioned and toggle it to be lighter, you can draw lighter areas. If you make it darker, it can shade. I got the dress texture by running the light grey over it in a criss-cross pattern, and afterwards shaded a little. Maybe I will make a tutorial to explain better.
