Hello, it's wonderful to see you here. Welcome to the first episode of Interpretation Time, I'm your host, coldfire, and today we're going to be analysing the lyrics of "Stuff Is Way", by They Might Be Giants, and trying to determine the meaning of the song. When we first listen to the song, all we hear is a random jumble of words that sounds like a 3 year old trying to read a Harry Potter book, or what would happen if you pushed the middle word-fill bar on a phone keyboard 200 times, and it seems to have no meaning. Well, this song could have many meanings put behind it, but they all would mean the same thing in the end.

-LYRICAL ANALYISIS- Let's look at the first few lines.. "Did you just what? Is what you yes? Did you whatever, whatever you I guess?" This could be interpreted as thoughts in the singer's head, after doing something wrong or crazy like committing a murder or arson. They are so shocked at what they've done that they have these thoughts, and their shock and/or guilt has driven them slightly batty, therefore they can't quite think correctly. "The stalking horse Was hides the guy And which the pony is a phony was a lie" The "stalking horse" could be referred to as a hunter, hence the word 'stalking'. The horse would be the hunter in this case, the hunter who is stalking their target and waiting for the best time to attack. "Was hides the guy" could be a line meaning that the hunter hid the body of the person they killed, or the evidence that they committed a crime or did something bad. -

"And which the pony is a phony was a lie" This could be a hint at how the person guilty is trying to cover up his tracks and not get caught by blaming it on an outside party, who would be referred to as the pony, which would explain why the pony was a phony, or a lie, because they have been blamed for committing the crime when they are innocent. "You say, stuff is way Way to go Go away" This could be interpreted as the hunter being tracked down, but the hunter was not able to be proven guilty, so the hunt slows down, as "Go away" would suggest. The hunter could also be trying to flee the scene of the crime, and "Go away" and "Way to go" could be what they're telling themselves after they flee successfully. "Who had you was? I yes you would It was catastro-, catastro-feeling good" This could be considered an outside person asking the person guilty about if they'd done anything wrong, as "Who had you was" would suggest, it could be thought of as the question "Who did you find" or "Who did you hurt"-

And the hunter would avoid answering the question to prevent blowing their cover, they instead answer with "I yes you would", which could be thought of as saying "Yes, you would", which to me would mean something similar to "If you were like me you'd do the same thing". "It was catastro-, catastro-feeling good" could suggest that the hunter feels proud of himself and that they were feeling good while they committed the crime. This makes no sense to the outside person so they stop asking questions, figuring they wouldn't get anywhere. "As it the drag That has you are Is in the bag That you drag behind your car" This could be ANOTHER outside force/person observing the hunter in the midst of getting rid of the evidence of the crime. "Is in the bag That you drag behind your car" suggest that the body of the victim is in a bag being dragged by the hunter's car as the hunter tries to dispose of it.

The chorus repeats, still giving off the same message.. "You say, stuff is way (Is what you say) Way to go (Is stuff is way) Go away (So way to go, so go away) Who had you was? (Who had you was?) I yes you would (I yes you would) It was catastro-, catastro-feeling good (It was catastro-, catastro-feeling good) As it the drag (As it the drag) That has you are (That has you are) Is in the bag (Is in the bag) That you drag behind your car (That you drag behind your car)" The backing vocals could represent the ghost or spirit of the victim/victims of murder, coming back to haunt the hunter.. And all of this seemingly useless and scattered information would be given by the hunter during an interrogation, who is, in fact, guilty... but he ACTS insane to try to confuse the police into letting him go, when he is actually COMPLETELY sane and guilty of the crime.
