Tabio was walking around the port and spotted a bar,deciding that since he was real far from home and no adults were watching over him he could get a chance to try alchohol for once,,so he went over to the bar and slowly opened the bar door,not expecting what he'd walk in to cuz he's never in in a bar before
Veronica had just thrown someone out a window, growling and looking over at two more men that were being held by a set of twins. "get em out of my sight! hang them, torture them i don't care." she seemed agitated, grabbing a bottle of whiskey from the bartop, picking up her hat of the floor. She wore her tradition dress, a bandage wrapped corset with slits on the sides of her skirt for easy leg movement.
He practically froze and stood there with his hand on the door,looking at the person who got thrown out the window,the twins,the guys where were being held,and then at veronica,he looked kind of shocked like when a child gets caught in trouble
The twins must have been around his age, grinning and running out with the two they had. The woman went over to an old man, giving him a cup of tea with a gentle smile. Who seemed sad before, then she leaned up against the wall next to him. Before feeling Tabio's eyes on her, she looked over with a brow raise.
When he saw that she was looking at him he locked his eyes onto the floor and made his way to the counter,taking a seat a few spaces from the two and then looking up at the bartender,kind of growing nervous because he's never done anything like this before,,he's thought about it and talked to friends about how he'd do it some day but now that he was there he kind of regretted it,,but in his mind he thought it was too late to turn back now
She continued to start at him, before sighing and patting the old man on the shoulder before making his way over. leaning on the bartop next to him, she asked the bartender for a refill. "and get the boy something, something light."
He looked up at her and then at the bartender then back at her,speaking in his nice tone that he usually used with adults"Ah-um-no thanks,,i can get my own thing don't worry about it,,"he anxiously tapped under the small part of counter with his small amount of nail
she pat his shoulder, "save your money, boy. you'll need it." she smiled when she got her drink, she smelled of salt and.. caramel. she sighed, taking a sip. "first time in a bar?"
"uh..kinda..what was all that back there?..."he smiled back at her nervousley
She huffed, "those three decided it was a good idea to mess with my cook and talor." She motioned over to the old man, who was happily drinking his tea and eating some steak.
"ah..that doesn't seem very cool...you don't disrespect the elderly.."He glanced over at him and then back up at her"I guess it makes more sense now.."he shrugged a little
she nodded, patting his back rather harshly. "your a good kid, next time you walk into the bar, don't act all scared that your seeing a bar fight. and don't stare either, gets people frusrated and thats what gets ya into one." she dropped some coin in front of him on the bartop.
he held onto the counter so he wouldnt fall while getting his hard back packs,looking at the coins for a bit,nodding at her point
she smiled, "also, if your looking to explore, we can use ya on the ship. fresh meat is always nice to see." she laughed, a parrot landing on her shoulder. squawking at him before being given a peanut.
he looked up at her"Huh?really?like an actual ship?with real captains n' stuff like that?"he looked kind of surprised and was exited,,he saw this as a chance to rlly get out in the water
She laughed. "Sure! Why not you come onto our ship for the next few days. We plan on going to an island for a supply run." A taller man walked over, skeptical. "Cap'n you sure? He seems a little.. inexperienced."
He looked at the man,not even paying attention to his drink,,he spoke in a higher tone,not like raising his voice but loud enough to show he was serious"I'm experienced in stuff!I'm a good fisher!and i can lift too!"
Veronica smiled. "Slim go easy on him." He growled, a metal arm pressing against the countertop. "Sure. What your gunna give em a curfew too?" He didn't seem keen on having him on board.
Slim's brow raised. His metal arm tapping the Bartop. "No, I don't want to fill out your funeral papers and contact your friends and family that you were eaten alive." He grinned.
He still kept his same position and expression,mumbling"s'not like they're care.."he spoke up"I'm not afraid of you!"he was kinda impressed by the metal arm,,,,he thought it looked really cool but with how this guy started off he didn't wanna tell him that
Veronica slugged the man in the back of head. Slim holding his head and growling. "Cap'n I'm just saying! He's a kid!" She huffed. "So we're you! Now get over it and go help Crooks up. We're leaving."
He cracked a smile when the man got hit and put his hand over his mouth like he was wiping something off his lips,but in this case he was wiping his smile off because when his hand went on his lap he had a straight face,,"So is this a yes?can i go?"
She sighed. "Yeah, slim's just grouchy." She chuckled at the thought.
he snickered"I'd be grouchy too if i had a metal arm"he looked back at the drink
she shrugged. "hey man we all lost something on that boat." she patted his back. "come out to the dock when your packed up and ready."
she walked back over to the old man, telling him the situation and helping him get up, walking out the bartender walked over. "your an idiot, ya know? those on her ship don't come back."
He picked up his cup and held it close to his mouth,looking at the bartender"What about those other people?"
they huffed. "the crew will tear you to shreds, plus, from the rumors, they're all dead, dead pirates of the crew. i heard there ship, as a hull of whale ribs." they laughed,
he rolled his eyes and took a sip of his drink,holding it in his mouth while his face scrunched up a little in disgust"mm..."
they sighed. "you should go get to packing, they leave at sundown." they was starting to clean out a cup.
He spit the drink back into the cup and set it down,wiping his mouth and nodding"alright-"he got out of his seat,pretty set on about getting on that ship
they watched him walk out, letting out a heavy sigh. "that poor boy."
Veronica was already suiting up to head out to see, hurling some food onto her ship, along its hull was the large rib bones of a whale, the dark navy sails blowing in the wind, ready to set off on its journey.
He went home.His parents and sister were out at the time doing fun things without inviting him so he took this time to grab his things like a few outfits,his lucky raincoat,hats,a few things to remind him of family and friends,and of course his fishing rod and kit.he put them all in his school bag.he pulled his rod onto his back,left a quick note on the fridge letting his mom know he'd be"out of a bit"and then headed out the door,starting to run to the place where their ship was
Veronica grinned, looking over to the boy. "Thought ya change your mind on us kid!" She laughed, hurling a bag of sugar over her shoulder. The Twins were singing songs and putting sacks of food and provisions below deck.
"Had to get my things!"he stopped by her and panted,putting his hands on his hands on his knees to catch his breath from running all the way from his house which was kind of a distance away from the ship
she chuckled, "go ahead and go set your stuff down, crooks will show ya your hammock down below. and then you come help us getting the rest of the pervisions." she smiled, walking up the plank to toss it down on the deck.
He took a moment to catch his breath and stood up straight,nodding"alright!"he looked around for the old man and kept his things with him for now.he felt more comfortable with his things to be by the place he was supposed to be resting at
the old man was below deck, cooking up a meal of sorts. He seemed like a sweet old man, looking over he gave a smile. a old cane helping him get around. "oh, hello son, i assume you need a bed to sleep at?" the below deck area was filled with crates and barrells, having a nice little cooking area and in the middle was the whale skull. the lower jaw was missing, but the skull was hanging from the ceiling by some rope.
he looked around and then up at the whale for a minute.he looked at the man and nodded,keeping a small smile"Yea.."
the old man smiled, turning off the burner before walking past the skull to the hammocks near the back. "here, we gave you the window if thats alright, you'll be sleeping next to slim. oh, and call me crooks. supper should be ready as soon as we set sail." he chuckled, walking back over to the cooking area. slim's hammock at a little chest under it, infact every hammock had one. but slims was locked. on top of each chest was a pelt, neatly folded. a blanket for the cold nights.
he was hoping slim wasn't who he thought it was and set his things under his hammock,looking out the window and taking some time to take all of this in"..."
Crooks was cooking away, The smell of onions and fish filling the room. The crates had provisions, jewelry, and some weaponry on the wall. There was another set of stairs going down to a sort of winery. But no one seems to go down there.
he decided to save the looking around for later and went back up to help veronica and the others with the bags
There were a couple more bags full of provisions. Veronica was hurling another bag. "Hey kid, are your parents okay with me taking ya? Don't want to steal ya and have a bounty on my head." She let out a hearty laugh.
he walked up to a bag and picked one up,holding it in his arms like he was helping someone that was choking"They're always talking about sending me away to do this kind of stuff"He huffed and walked over to where they're supposed to put the bags down"so many times!for so long!"He dropped the bag and went back to get another one"so many times!"holding it the same way as before"It's ALWAYS"¡Tabio! ¡Tabio! ¡Deja de hacer esto! ¡Para de hacer eso! ¡No digas esto! ¡No toques eso! ¡Nunca haces esto bien! ¡Nunca dices esto bien! ¡Sé como tu hermana! ¡Te vamos a enviar a lugares donde te harán entrar en razón!"cuz it's ALWAYS ME who's messing up right??They want me gone SOOO badly so i solved the problem for them!i'm out here!"he dropped the bag again and went back to get another"Now they can stay with the perfectly perfect daughter they have!"he picked it up and struggled a little but just dealt with it,doing the same as before"don't even worry about it.I don't care so you shouldn't either."he dropped the bag
She raised her brows, perplexed. "Hm. Huh, did you at least leave em a note? Ya know sometimes they deeply care about you, even if it don't seem like it." She dropped the bag, letting the twins take off with it below deck.
"Yea i left em a note..maybe they'll read it this time"he rolled his eyes and walked back up to her
She nodded, "here, tell crooks I'll be a little late for dinner. I gotta grab some iron from the Blacksmith." She smiled, patting his shoulder. In reality she was going to find his family, Hand on the sword she had strapped to her side. She wasn't going to do anything unless it got dicey.
he looked up at her and nodded,turning to go find crook again
his family were at the park
She huffed, looking for them. Walking around, before finding them. Raising a brow, the family seemed.. strange to her. She sighed, walking over. "Sir, miss."
The father was pushing a girl who looked around 8 on the swings and the mother was on a bench smiling until veronica came over.the dad grabbed the girl off the swing and held her while the mother looked over and lost her smile,nobody said anything and just looked at her in confusion
She sighed. "If it helps, I am not here to cause problems. I am here to inform you about your son." She looked at them both, she felt like somebody coming to informed them that their son is drad.
The mother looked kind of worried while the dad just crossed his arms and the girl watched.the mother stood up"Tabi?w-whats wrong?did something happen?is he hurt?"she took a step closer to her as the dad spoke up"What trouble has he caused now?If he messed something up don't worry i'll pay for it"he huffed
She shook her head. "He's fine, i just would like to inform you that he's leaving. He's coming with me. I want to know if he has an allergens or anything I should be aware of. He has left you all a note for you to read back at home." She gave a gentle smile, something most would not see.
That just worried mom more and she went up to her"Leaving?!where?!why?did you kidnap him?!"
Father stepped over and calmed her down"You don't look ordinary..are you a captain?he probably took a chance to get out in the water huh?finally!that boy is doing something productive!"
She laughed. "No ma'am, this is his decision and his decision alone." She looked over at the father. Raising a brow. "Hm, I am indeed a captain. And I assure you, he will be safe in my hands. If its up to him to stay with me, I will mail you that decision he has made. I apologize for worrying you, miss." She smiled, looking over at her.
"But he's just a kid!he can't leave he can't!where is he?i want my baby!"
The father said something to her in spanish that sounded like comfort.the girl just started to have fun on the swings by herself and the mother started to tear up at the fact tabio was technially old enough to make his own desicions and knew he's kinda always wanted an oprotunity like this,,she was sad that it was so sudden tho-she thought she would have more time with him until he made that desicion,,,she looked up at her"where is he?..i don't want a note..i wanna see his face...i want to talk to him!take me to my son!"
She paused. "Ma'am, I'm not sure he wants to see any of you. I apologize, really. I understand as a mother your pain. But sometimes things don't go as plan. I will make it my main mission to protect your son." She sighed, she didn't really understand. She didn't have a child, never had the time to get close to someone. But she tried to be comforting.
She kept protesting against it and the father tried to convince her it wasn't as bad as it sounded
She sighed, giving in. "You can't get on my ship, but you can see him. And he can choose whether to see you or not." She felt sorry for lying to Tabi, but she wanted to at least talk to the parents.
The momther agreed to that and waited for her to lead the way,the father calling the little girl over to get this over with since she was putting up such a fight
Tabi was probably looking around the boat and tried to avoid running into slim as much as possible
Veronica was walking back to the doc. Slim on the other hand was in the crow's nest, eating away at the soup Crook's made for everyone. He didn't seem to want to see Tabi just yet.
tabi's family followed her,the mother asking several questions like what they did,were they good pirates,how many there were,was tabi too young for the job,if he'd be back,the questions just wouldnt end
Veronica chuckled, "hey kid! Somebody wants to see ya!" She didn't answer any of the questions. She walked up the plank, stopping him before he came over to the edge. "You don't have to get off the ship, and if you want to talk to them. You don't have to." She smiled, getting out of the way.
"Talk to who?"he looked back at her confused for a moment before looking over and seeing his family,just staring like"😶"
His mom started waving and yelling from where she was standing like a parent cheering for their child playing a sport"TABIO!!WE WANTED TO TELL U HOW MUCH WE LOVE U AND ARE PROUD OF YOU!PLEASE STAY SAFE OUT THERE AND DON'T FORGET ABOUT US!!WE'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU"she started tearing up again,,tabi was silent for a moment
"You mean it?"
she spoke"YES!WE'RE SO SORRY WE DIDN'T SPEND ENOUGH TIME WITH YOU!!WE THOUGHT WE HAD MORE TIME WITH YOU!!YOU'RE STILL YOUNG AND LEARNING!"
his lip quivered at these news but it eventually turned into a smile"DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT MOM!IT'S ALRIGHT I GET IT!"
dad spoke"WHEN U GET BACK HOW ABOUT U AND ME HIT THE WATER AY?"tabi laughed"OK!"
the little girl spoke now"Bye tabio!!"
he ran down and gave them all a hug,,group hug yey,,
She smiled, before sighing. "Kiddo! We gotta get going, the sun's hit the sea!" Slim looked down, growling before coming down. He didn't seem fond of family reunions, going to wash his bowl before getting on with fixing the mast to face the wind's direction.
she patted her back, "its alright kiddo, but we gotta get movin'." she smiled. before yelling at the twins to start pulling up the anchor. "ever pulled an anchor up before?" she looked over, smiling as the twins started on pulling up the anchor.
She nodded. "See how the twins moving those bars on those gears in a circle? Get on one of those bars and start pushing it. The faster we get it up the better." She chuckled.
He nodded and went over to where the twins were,getting on one of the bars and started doing what they were doing
she smiled, waving to the family as a final goodbye before the ship was on the move. the twins pushed down a stake in the middle of gears, seeming to put everything to a stop, not the ship though. "alright, slim, gunna steer for a bit?" Slim dropped the sails, nodding and going over to the wheel. Crook stopped veronica in her tracks, complaining about her sleeve being ripped again, making her laugh.
he saw what they did and looked around for any stakes,doing the same thing,,after that he went on the edge of the ship and waved to his family as well,,the father and kid waved back while the mother was trying to get out of the fathers grasp to swim after the ship
she smiled, watching them as she sat down and have crooks fixed her sleeve. "you should get some soup, Tabio. feel free to fish too, crooks loves the supplies. and if you want, you can see if there's clams on the anchor below deck." she chuckled, slim was watching the sea, humming.
He looked over and smiled"Alright^^thank you"He remembered where the kitchen was and went down there to get some soup🍲he wasn't a fan of eating fish so when he got it he kinda just picked the fish out and ate the other contents inside,deciding to use the cooked fish for bait
the twins were over at their hammocks, they seemed around his age, maybe a year older. but they didn't seem to bothered to have him here, unlike slim. They were telling each other stories, some about Veronica and some about conspiracies about how slim lost his arm.
He was by the hammock room,standing by the wall just listening in to their theories about slim since he kinda wanted to know too,,but after a bit he walked in like he heard nothing to go and grab his fishing tools and rod to get the clams and go fishing afterwards,,he didn't say anything
Slim was done, letting Veronica have her time steering. He had his own fishing pole, it matched his arm as he sat off the edge of it. His line in the water as he stared off into the stars.
He came back up with his rod and mini fishing kit going on the same side as slim but kept a distance from him,using the cooked fish as bait and casting his line out as well as setting the rod down.he sat and looked out at the ocean
Slim looked over, staring at the rod and the fishing kit. "Parents didn't take ya fishing seriously? he huffed, raising a brow.
He looked back and kept silent for a moment,then spoke,looking back at the water"No..not really.."
He sighed, reeling up his line and grabbing his box before walking over. "Reel up ya line. The fish won't bite with what ya got. Around this time its sight. Ya need something that'll flash in the light." He opened up his box, grabbing a thin piece of metal attached with a swivel.
He looked up at him and did as he was told,,he's never actually went fishing during the night so he thought it was best if he just listened to someone he thought did
He huffed. "Now with the moving ship what'll do is mimic a injured fish. This is also good for getting barracuda. And if your looking for squid." He grabbed a medieval looking bait. It was a wooden stick with barbs all around it sticking out. The wooden part was painted white. It was attached to a rope. "This you'll have to rope fish, and you gotta be quick too, some are cannibalistic." He chuckled. "They also leave a nasty bite if your in the water with em."
He listened closely and looked at the bait slim had grabbed then at him"How do you know?Have you gotten bit?"he looked a little nervous since he's never actually handled the things he was talking about,,the biggest thing he's handled in the water was a shark that was only half his size but he loves a challenge
He sighed, rolling up his sleeve. On his arm were a pinch like scar on his forearm. As if someone took two metal pokers and pinched him with it. "They leave a lot of damage. The beak can crush clams and other deep sea critters."
He nodded. "Here, you know how to attach a swivel?" He handed over the swivel with the metal disc. "Attach that to the line, then add your hook. Don't put any bait on it. Just throw it out there, with the boat moving its gunna be like a fish swimming with the boat."
He nodded and added the swivel"Why are you helping me?I thought you didn't like me.."he spoke as he added his hook
he huffed. "just because i'm like this, doesn't mean i don't like you. I just don't want to be responsible for some idiotic mistake you might do." he grumbled, getting the squid lure set up.
he nodded, "your set up, just let it swim along side the hull." he huffed, getting up and step and few feet away, starting to swing the lure before throwing it out there.
he didn't sit down as he waiting, smiling. before the rope nearly slide out of his hands. tightening his grip he yank the rope up, pulling a squid out of the water, throwing it on deck. it was already bleeding from several bites similar to the one he had on his arm. "Crooks! i got you breakfast!" he knelt down to it, hitting it in the head and watch its color change from red to white.
He was shocked and amazed by how quickly he pulled that one in and walked over to it"woah.."
he glanced over. "its dead, you wanna come see it?" he huffed, seeming a little embarrassed. Veronica was watching them from the wheel, happy those two were getting along somewhat.
He looked at the lifeless squid and poked at it with his foot"how'd you do that?wasn't it red at first?"
He chuckled. "Its red when its alive, once its dead, all of it stops so it just turns white." He grabbed a knife, moving the tentacles out of the way to get to the mouth. Cutting out the beak and holding it. "This is what causes some scarring."
he sighed. "if you want," he removed the lure. "you can give this a shot." crooks was coming out to see what he got. smiling at the sight of the squid.
"I don't wanna lose your lure or anything..."He rubbed the back of his neck
he huffed, "you won't. i'll be right next to ya." he held it out to him.
".....alright"He took it and went to the same spot slim had walked to
he followed him, "wind it up before throwing it, it gives some power into it. causing it to go farther."
He nodded and winded it up like he was asked to,then he tossed it out and held onto the end of the rope just like slim did
he sighed, "pull in some rope, your gunna lose it all like that. its like your reel. with very little line in the gage as soon as you get a bite you'll lose it."
he pulled some rope in,this moment was kind of reminding him about when his dad taught him to fish for the first time
he sat down on the edge. "now when it bites its gunna pull straight down, you gotta be quick and reel it in. As soon as its friends smell the blood they'll eat it alive." he watched the water, huffed.
