Thank you!
Ive been doing research on autism for about 5 years now, because i noticed i exhibited some symptoms that i had heard of. After doing extensive research, i do believe i have autism, but a diagnosis costs thousands of dollars, and my family doesnt have that kind of money. What this post is about is how i used to describe vocal stims as quoting things, which it is not. I was told by many other autistic ppl that that was what a vocal stim was but after looking into it more now i see it is not. Why sometimes i do make noises that are like audios to self regulate my emotions, i think the rest are verbal stimming. A vocal stim isnt really like speaking sentences, its more of like noises. For me i make squeaking noises when i get overwhelmed and it helps me calm down though i try to keep them quiet as to not weird out others. Repeated phrases can be stimming but theyre verbal, not vocal stims

Im sorry if i spread any misinformation on the subject, i do take this kind of thing very seriously and i have done research for years to make sure that i was educated on it so i could identify my symptoms

Im upset about the usage of people saying theyre overstimulated when they are just overwhelmed. It really bothers me as neurodivergent people like me have always been looked down upon and made fun of, and to take something vulnerable we experience in our everyday lives and make it sound like its a thing everyone deals with suddenly just makes no sense. You will laugh at others who have a break down at loud noises, bright lights, etc, and then go on to say you are overstimulated while youre writing an essay for class. It bothers me a lot.

And the misusage of panic attacks as well. No, just because youre reallt anxious over your test in math doesnt mean you are having a panic attack. A panic attack literally causes people to stop functioning and their thinking is fragmented and foggy, causing them to spiral. Seriously, can we stop taking terms for serious things and using them when you are in fact NOT experiencing that? It makes me very angry.

Anyways, i sort of went on a tangent there, but i wanted to apologize to the misinformation i mightve given people here. If you really want to know more about autism i highly recommend talking to a professional or an adult who has autism who can share their experiences.

I'm probably guilty of this but I've been diagnosed with autism for years now and not even I can tell the difference between a vocal stim and just like idk repeating something for fun idk I don't rly use the terminology because of how people apply it to anything now like no your new interest you just picked up is not a 'hyperfixation'

Verbal and vocal stimming are very similar so its okay. And the hyperfixation thing bothers me a lot too. For me a hyperfixation literally takes up my whole life for a period of time and its all i talk about or do, and i rewatch and reread content from that media daily. It genuinely gets in the way of life and doing normal activities for me at times

It also bothers me when someone says their special interest is something but they don't know even the most basic of things about the media sometimes.

Yeah exactly I've had my fair share of them and they're not always fun to deal with! It all just feels like babying to me whenever the autism terminology is used because people love to apply it to themselves to like. Be cute? Or special?? I don't know. It really irks me, like when people post about how they discovered they stim and they get all excited like stimming isn't an autism exclusive thing and it's not some cutesy thing either sometimes if I don't stim when I need to I can feel my skin crawling it's icky
