Long droughts used to be normal on the small island with many names.
Leon could remember it clearly- years of struggle, crops withering, livestock barely staying hydrated, everything slowing down. Itβd started almost a year before he was born, and one day, when he was just three, something amazing had happened.
A thunderbird.
After four years of no rain, on a quiet, cloudless evening, heβd been in town with his father, buying food for his family.
That was when the creature had come.
It was large enough to pick up a horse with ease, with a cry like a hundred eagles shouting in unison.
The clouds rolled in, and it began to storm.
Ever since, it had rained at least once every two weeks, and though no magic bird had been spotted since that fated day, people still claimed they saw the outline of a giant bird, flying above the clouds, thunder echoing in its wake.
