In a lot of aspects it’s annoying to denote how someone speaks as incorrect or commonly called “ghetto” “That’s not how you speak” is common way I hear people when they aren’t used to hearing aave

An also common occurrence is seeing non black people mock it or use it incorrectly You don’t know how many times I see people abuse terms “I’m finna gonna” “It’s giving no” etc. If you aren’t familiar to aave just casually ask what something means- and don’t try to speak it because it will be very obvious if you don’t know and is embarrassing

It only really becomes questionable again if you mock it or try to “correct” it using it is fine after all language is shared through learning and how you are raised Though of course some words are cut off like really horrible slurs

I was exposed to it at a young age, less about trying to “fit in” etc- none of the people I’m around have a problem with it but it’s mainly because I actually know what I’m saying because again I learned it When it comes to white people who use it to try and “act black” etc I don’t like it

Yeah, i have a good amount of white in me. Because of who i grew up around and where i lived, i was exposed to it as well. I ****in' hate dudes who use it to act "black" or tough as well. I haven't seen it much with the opposite sex, but there was this one damn girl with her ****in' green stained blonde wig who used it then got expelled for having possession of a cigar 😭

LOL it’s REALLY common around here when it comes to girls and it’s always like second hand embarrassment- and what’s even weirder about people who try to act that way is as a stated not every black person even uses aave- there’s a lot of individuals who weren’t exposed to it or were scolded for using it If you weren’t born black nothing will magically make you it- you just have to learn how to be yourself and embrace who you are instead

Yeah I’ve seen it be accepted way more when white people speak it as an excuse because they are southern- and though I do agree some links can be tied w aave and the south they are not the same things as there’s plenty of people outside of the south of amercia that use aave like in the Caribbean

Also I’m aware this is about African Americans but from the standpoint of a Mexican it’s the same when people randomly speak Spanish words or with a Spanish accent like “foo” or “cuh”, a lot of non-latino people just use those words to try and seem tough I HATE it so much when you only notice people changing their way of talking when they’re arguing, like you don’t speak like that normally but suddenly you’re using aave or Chicano slang to be “intimidating” as if regular people don’t speak like that everyday Just giving people a bad rap

OH I definitely agree that every race has there own way of speaking culturally- and though language can be shared I definitely don’t think using it as a menacing way is ever a good thing I DEFINITELY heard people say foo or cuh already around here a lot of Black and Hispanic cultures seem to interweave and it can definitely be bad for both parties involved

Totally- a lot of people stereotype the speakers of it as being dumb or mistaught because they think aave is just incomplete English and that the people were just never taught it properly Most of the users actually know proper English and can write it it’s just how they speak casually and for some reason the United States and other countries discourage speaking that way because it’s “not proper”

Most if not all the younger school teachers I was around always was against that way of talking calling kids out specifically to make fun of it It got really unnecessary a lot of times But I think AAVE is a aspect of culture that can be shared just like food or gifts- it’s just unfortunately misused and criticized a lot

Yes 🙁 a lot of racist people think that black people are stupid just on this way of speaking- I always hear micro aggressions about it whenever I’m out with my friends or when around other people They will either mock it or say they didn’t go to school Aave is innovation its unique and its important It’s made it’s mark on Amercian culture and on internet- some of the most commonly used words are derived from AAVE It’s ironically the racist people being ignorant- they don’t under that AAVE doesn’t dictate someone’s literary ability- people way more well spoken then me and most of there class speak the same way it’s about more then just improper English

Your in the right to hold your own opinion I’m sure you have had your own negative experiences- I don’t doubt some of the white people you have been around use AAVE incorrectly or even to attempt to meld with the black community I’ve seen it well myself- though I think that in some ways black culture can be implemented into a white persons life they can never change there race- Using AAVE incorrectly or obsessently is one of the biggest indicators- not to mention probably a little insulting To try and take something that is tied to blood and skin and attach outside behaviors and knowledge to it is ignorant- white people who try to be black always irk me And the double standard towards both races is irritating- I see it way to much when I went to school there’s so many examples to choose from Like the limitations on clothes and expression What’s right to do when your white vs when your black Favoritism and leniency

The reason I speak about this while being white is that being surrounded in a black community that has always respected me and loved me the same and seeing white people deject black people in the opposite fashion pisses me off Seeing someone I love and care about get insulted and judged based off the way they speak is wrenching and knowing that I will never have to worry about that I want that to change and I want the negative association with AAVE to be changed It is not something that makes you look poor and unruly- it’s not ghetto it’s a way to speak that reflects history and culture

I’ll always be a big advocate for black justice and rights and speaking about discrimination and hate against them It’s one of my biggest and strongest mindsets and opinions, it’s one of my core values No matter where I go to or who I’m around with, how old I get or what happens
