For trading, it heavily depends on how rare the item is and if not rare/valuable the quantity money doesn't matter anymore as much as it used to so you have to keep as much metal as possible, you can trade food, recipes, and medical supplies for metal, because that is usually what you strive for, plenty of metal? Trading it is the dumbest thing you can do unless that person is selling weapons or seeds, and it still matter of quantity quality and rarity. For my silly guy, He was stupid and decided to live somewhere where potatoes grow every five seconds, but, if he were to find a village or a group of travelers, maybe they don't have potatoes, maybe they do and just need more for a recipe? Easy sale for a couple of new seeds and supplies, make good money choices cause you’ll never know when a flash growth or rain comes.
