A flash of anger surged through Void’s face, his eyes narrowed. “I don’t need you. If they see that I need your support they would be worse.” He snapped bitterly. Nathan flinched, sighed, then looked at the ground between him and Void. “What happened?” Void sighed, knowing Nathan was not going to back down. Regardless, he shook his head, but said nothing. Nathan sighed. Hehad a hunch on what had happened. Nathan stared at Void, then asked “Did they kick your scar?” It was Void’s turn to flinch, but remained his steady gaze on the floor between them. “They did, didn’t they,” Nathan concluded, fear gripping his stomach, not for himself, but for Void. “So what if they did?” Void said softly. “Is it re-opened?” “I’m fine.” “With a scar like that, no. You're not fine. You know you are going on the death quest today! You’ve got to be more careful!”

“Careful?” Void scoffed. “Yeah right. After I have revenge for Ashton and Orca.” Nathan shifted uncomfortably. Ashton was Void’s oldest and only brother, his closest friend. Not only that, but he was the next leader of Nimrod, one of the highest ranked scholars of the strange rag-tag town. Good lad, that one. Then there is Orca. The older sister, and the next general of Nimrod. Both fairly important people, but, they were sent on the quest that every squire had been sent on for the last century. No one succeeded. No one was seen again. That’s why it is called the death quest. Now it was Void’s turn, after nine years of his older sibling's absence. “Just- just don’t die, okay?” Nathan pressed, seizing Void’s shoulder fiercely. “ Yeah, okay. Even If I have to hide in a hole for 40 years, I’ll make sure I will survive.” Void promised with a rare smile. Nathan sighed. “Good.” “Okay great. Can you let go of my shoulder? Your nails are making me bleed.”

Sure enough, Nathan’s nails had dug into Void’s skin, turning his shirt a soft red hue. “Yeah, sorry about that.” he apologized, and released his grip. Void rubbed his shoulder and looked up at Nathan, to realize he was crying. Nathan, the great, powerful defender of Nimrod, crying over Void. It almost seemed impossible. Almost. Now it was happening, and Void probably was going to die. Void looked shockingly like his mother, Angelina, who was killed by his father when Void was one year of age. For that, his father was exiled, leaving Void, Aston and Orca to raise themselves as orphans. Angelina was Nathan’s little sister. Maybe, just maybe, that's why he cared so much about Void, enough to raise Void as his own. Nathan sighed, and helped Void to his feet. Void leaned on Nathan’s shoulder lightly. Nathan looked down at him, and gave him a soft, sad smile.

Suddenly, a loud bell echoed throughout the hall, making Void jump. “It’s time.” Nathan said grimly, griping Void’s hand tightly, then let it go. Void inhaled sharply, and followed Nathan out the door, around the side of the building, into a clearing at the front of the building where there was a large wooden platform. Selene stood on the platform, holding a clipboard. Selene was a fairly short elf, with dark brown hair with yellow cat-like eyes. She smiled at the sight of them, mothioning Nathan to join her up on the platform, which he did reluctantly. “Ah there you are Void. Are you aware that you are going today?” Void nodded, not looking her in the eye. “Good. Go into the hospital, and there you will meet the person you are going on the death quest with.” Void exhaled, then walked to the hospital hall, tying his hair up high in the same matter that Nathan did. Nathan sighed as he watched Void head to the hall. “Do you think he’ll be alright?” Nathan asked Selene, voice cracking with emotio

. Selene looked at him, then said, “Yes, he should be. You should know not to grow attached.” Nathan sighed, and looked away, not wanting to show Selene the tears that were sliding silently down his face. Selene sighed, knowing that there was nothing she could do. “ You know, he is really powerful. He shouldn’t get harmed too bad. “ Wrong thing to say. Nathan swayed on his feet, grief crushing him, making it hard for him to breathe. “I am supposed to protect him. Protect him for Angelina.” Nathan said, his voice heavy with grief. “It is his time. Who knows? Maybe he’ll succeed.”
