Strange. It was the only word that came to mind. Not wrong. No. Nothing about it was wrong. He looked around as if to confirm the normality of the situation to himself. First he looked to her face. She was beautiful, as she always was. Her expression was calm. Indifferent almost as she walked alongside him. So maybe it was the street. No, not the street either. All the buildings looked just as decrepit as ever. Pipes and electrical cables strewn along the walls like vines. Trash laying in various places on the ground. The only light coming from the dim white street lights that lined their path. He looked at every little detail of the world around him and yet he still found himself puzzled. What was it that was so wrong with this picture? He let his gaze fall on her again. As if feeling his eyes upon her she turned to face him. She smiled. There was nothing that made him happier than her smile. Maybe he should stop trying to find something wrong with it. It was simply just a good night.

Why should this joy he felt bother him? With this though it dawned on him what was so strange. He had never felt this calm. Not yesterday, or any day. It was unnatural for him not to be worried. A screeching noise from behind them interrupted his thoughts. They both turned to see a black car, slowing as it came closer. She looked at him, fear in her eyes. The driver side window of the car rolled down. Everything went silent. Everything except for the snaps of the gun shots. As the car sped off he tried to assess the situation. Was she ok? When he looked beside him he saw her fall to the ground. Two holes in her purple hoodie. Panic Consumed him as he knelt down and held her in his arms. The spots around her wounds began spilling out blood. She coughed and clutched her stomach where she’d been hit. What could he do? He looked down the street to see if the car was still in sight. But it was long gone now. As the reality of the situation began to sink in he felt a sharp pain in his chest.

His shirt slowly turned a dark crimson red. Standing he stumbled backward, lifting his shirt to reveal the bullet hole. His back hit a wall and he sank down. The world was quiet. He was alone. Scared. His vision grew blurry. Taking one last look up at the sky he saw a dark figure on a rooftop. Squinting it became clear it was a hairless black cat. Watching the situation unfold. Judging with its bright green eyes. The world faded away and everything went dark. Clay awoke with a gasp. His breathing slowed as he began to calm down. Blackness filled the room like ink, making very little visible even after his eyes had adjusted. Sweat had covered his body. He hated it when that happened. It always made it harder to get back to sleep. As he lay there he thought about his dream. Thank god it was a dream. Even still it bothered him. No other dream scared Clay as much as that one. For some reason he kept having it. Not every night but often enough that he wondered why it continued to return.

Brushing it aside he fumbled his way through the dark room and out into the hall. Taking care to be quiet until he remembered that he was alone in the apartment. It was nice when he had the apartment to himself. He was relieved of a great deal of the stress that came with having his brother around. Always wondering whether or not he was going to get pissed and yell at him, or kick him out. Sometimes he wished he could kill Luke. He never could. That didn’t stop him from thinking about it though. It was important to remember that. People can think and even say a lot of things, but it’s what they do that counts. Maybe if he applied that logic to every situation he wouldn’t worry so much about what people thought of him. Finishing using the bathroom he washed his hands and looked in the mirror. Dark bags sat below his tired brown eyes. His dark brown hair messy from sleep. Every time he looked at his face he felt a pit form in his stomach. He hated it. His large nose and thick lower lip.

The way he always looked angry. Every time he looked at himself he wished he could change what he saw. He wished he could be someone else. Too tired to stay awake, he decided not to go out for a smoke, but thought about calling Ella. No. He better not wake her up. She could already be up. What time was it? Clay walked out to the living room and through to the kitchen. The clock on the oven read four fifty three. She would be asleep. That’s alright though, he’d see her later. Sleep would be impossible for him now unless he took some pills. So he rummaged through the medicine drawer until he found the bottle with a sticky note taped over the label, that read “Sleep.” Filling a cup with water from the sink he went back to his room.

Sure. The pet you just read was from Clays part of the story. He is a teen living in the outskirts of the mega city Eden in the year 2132. His story shows the violent gang activity that goes in the city. The other part of the story is about Troy Miller. A young man that operates as a member of the resistance. An organization dedicated to forcing political change, in an otherwise useless system. Both story’s end badly but the main characters do survive, which opens up the possibility of sequels. Both are tied together by various elements and characters. However the two main characters never meet.
