LinkIt was a late spring evening. The curtains were closing on the cloudless day. The sun's fading orange glow stretched across the horizon, casting shadows behind every object that jotted from the earth.
A young girl, no more than 8 years of age, was perched up in a lonesome oak. She sat on the the highest branch of the monstrous thing, rocking back and forth and humming a sweet melody under her breath.
Heavy winds gripped the tree, shaking in back and forth. It was a wonder the girl didn't fall.
"Wish I could see the world," She chirped, "Wish I could hear the world. Wish I could taste, wish I could..."
The girl cut off, her eyes closing somberly.
"Smell..?" A voice finished her lyrics. The girl glanced over her shoulder to see a woman balancing precariously behind her.
The woman had long, pale blond hair that hung in a loose ponytail tucked behind her. She wore an old green cloak with tattered fabric roses stitched into the collar.

LinkThe girl gave the woman a tiny grin, laced with bittersweet joy and grief.
"You finally came," The child murmured. The woman paused. It had been so long since she'd seen the girl, she wanted to be able cherish this reunion for as long as she could.
"Believe me, I've wanted to speak with you for so long." The woman swayed as a sudden shift in the wind shoved her from behind.
The girl rolled her eyes. "Always so clumsy, Rayna." She purred.
Rayna snorted. "At least I wasn't such a know-it-all."
She squinted at the sun, which making it's way down at an alarmingly quick rate. There there wasn't much time left.
The little girl tapped her fingers expectantly. If the woman wanted to talk before the sun went down, she'd better make it quick.
"I-I need you," The woman stammered quickly. "We all do. You have more power than all of us."
"How flattering." The girl muttered sarcastically.

Link"How flattering." The girl muttered sarcastically.
"No, really." Rayna made her way to the girl and put her hand on her shoulder. "You're the only one who can stop what's coming. Please, tell me who did it."
The girl yanked her shoulder away.
"It's not my place to tell you this," She sighed, shaking her head.
At that moment, the sun dropped below the horizon line. The little girl began to glow, her body bright enough to illuminate the dark fields beneath the oak.
"Wait-!" The woman reached out to grab the girl, but her hands phased through her shirt.
A particularly strong gust of wind swept in and the girl's body exploded in a blinding burst of light. Miniscule glowing shards rained down to the ground
Rayna stared off into the distance, her entire body quivering. "I'm sorry, Riley." She whispered, the wind carrying her words to oblivion. "I'm sorry everyone, I let you down."
"I'm so sorry."
