I first paint the base color and then with a darker tone example if its red then brown, I lower the opacity and make it barely visible and start doing dots with the second or third pen size (yes this part is kinda tedious), then with the base color again I do more dots with a bit or no opacity depending how it looks better. It’s about looking what looks better honestly, if it’s a dark color that looks better with the base then you do the dots with that, if it’s a lighter color that fits better then you use the lighter color for the dots
