Journal Entry 1: Today I got this journal. I’ve never had a journal before, but I think how most people use it is they put down a summary of the events of their day. But anyway, I got this journal today. I got it for free when the lady say who I was… Some of the other children gave me some dirty looks. Journal Entry: 5 A boy got in trouble for saying my eyes were strange. I don’t think either of us knew the teacher was eavesdropping. I had tried to explain that I’d brought up the subject, but she didn’t listen! Just apologized for what he said and shooed me off. All we were doing was playing, pointing out features only we have. It’s unfair, he did nothing wrong… Journal Entry: 20 I’m getting tired of this. I can’t help what color my eyes are, everyone treats me differently from the other kids… I hadn’t even realized until someone pointed it out. Or, maybe I did, and just didn’t want to acknowledge it.

Journal Entry: 31 There’s a festival next week, my mother said I have to say something about how it’ll be a great year or something. I don’t want to go. I feel like I’m treated more like a delicate glass statue than another person. Journal Entry: 32 I’m not going, I’ve made up my mind. I have a few things packed, mostly clothing and a bit of food. I may as well bring this, just to have something to pass the time. It’s a long walk to the mountain after all. Journal Entry: 38 I can see the lights of the festival, or I had. Before everything caught on fire. The mountain provides a great view of my village. Once I get to the top I’ll scale back down the other side. Oh right, I got about half way up the mountain today. I’ve had time to think to myself too, and I can’t help but think of the old legend about dragons under the mountain…

Journal Entry: 46…? I- fell down the hole in the cave at the top of the mountain. A few days ago- I think. Honestly I think I’m either dreaming or dead, because a D R A G O N, told me that I’d be out for a few days. Journal Entry: ??? Oh gosh I forgot this existed! I should start writing in this again. Okay, so, today I told Azzy today that my name was Matilda, he wouldn’t stop pestering me about it. We both like the nickname he gave me better anyways. Anything to forget about my old village. Journal Entry: ??? Today Aspen and Snakeroot let Azzy and I go shopping. By ourselves. With actual money! Thaw we earned! It feels so great earning something, and then using it to get what I want. Everything was just handed to me back in the village, not to mention I never hung out with kids my age without an adult. Anyway Azzy spent all his money on sweets, well I spent most of it on this wonderfully patterned blanket! It’s so soft too! I spent the rest of mine on a small wooden figure of a fox.

Journal Entry: ??? Aspen made me a leafwing costume! She used her leafspeak to make strong vines to hold it all together, and it’s so comfy! She said that she and Snakeroot had been planning it for some time. It was very nice of them. Journal Entry: ??? I’m not sure about this anymore. I hate seeing mom and dad worry… And Azzy keeps beating himself up about all this. But it’s fine! It’ll be over soon, I just have to keep reassuring him. *The rest of the pages are missing. . .
