LinkPermanent magnets always pull with magnetic force, but not all magnets are permanent. Some magnets can turn on and off.
Another kind of magnet is an electromagnet. An electromagnet is a magnet that can turn on and off. When electricity flows through an electromagnet, it pulls with magnetic force. But it stops pulling when electricity stops flowing.
You can make an electromagnet. Wrap a wire around an iron nail. Then connect the wire to a battery. Electricity flows through the wire. It gives the wire and nail magnetic force. You can pick up paper clips with it. The magnet turns off if you stop the electricity. The paper clips fall down.
Doorbells and motors use electromagnets. They are also used in scrap yards to pick up and drop off metal.
