I'd say it's not too unusual cuz people are so unpredictable fr and for some reason sincerity is so hard to read 😬 the compliment thing especially I think it's a decent rule of thumb to just say thanks either way and roll with it hehe

Sure! it's nice to make sure if someone wants to give you things, I do the same. and about that compliment stuff, there's truly isn't no need to overthink it, trusttt lol.
