One of my best memories of 2ndgrade was a study of our solar system. Learning about the moon, the planets, and the sun was fascinating. My teacher, Ms. Amos, wanted us to know the names and the order of the planets in our solar system, so she taught us the sentence “My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.” The first letter of each word in the sentence represented a planet –“Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.”Fast forward to 2006 when the IAU (International Astronomical Union) announced that Pluto is no longer a planet! Now my sentence that helps me remember planet order doesn’t make sense –“My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine.” Before making such a huge decision, the IAU should have considered how many people had grown up learning about Pluto being the 9thplanet, and that adjusting to a change like this is difficult.
