When in battle, usually your hands and arms are down due to the weight the axe. But, if you hold the axe luke this, not only will you be ready to swing, but it gives a great workout.

Dummy: *Grabs your neck before you swing* Hey, D-6, what'd I say about choking?

Dummy-6: *Grumbles and walks away* Don't worry about that droid, he tends to actually have feelings.
