I don’t really like “color” washing of any kind, black, white whatever It used to bother me more but it’s like idrc anymore 😭😭 the white washing is most diabolical ummmm I think making like characters without canon races like mlp or sonic characters like have their own unique skin color is fine idk
I’m the mayor of giving characters unusual skin tones however I would be lying if I said I don’t think that pinkie pie and knuckles are black coded
In the wiki for knuckles they actually describe his hair as dreadlocks and they are typically mentioned as such across the fandom and of course that is a common style for black people and is closely associated with them
For pinkie pie besides her curly hair that I will argue any race can have she specifically uses a hair pick in one scene that is commonly used by black people for styling their hair specifically afros
A lot of the time black coding focuses on hair texture and styles in characters that aren’t human, because hair styles and texture are a big trademark of the black community
This doesn’t mean you can’t draw pinkie or knuckles white and I won’t attack you if you do but they were always black to me and there’s reasons why people relate them to being black
No but actually 😭
Especially the MLP color debate! I think it's wrong to imagine all of them as white, because that quite literally defeats the message/purpose of their friendship as being a diverse group of different individuals with very different upbringings!
They're colorful fictional ponies, so for one to say, "Pinkie Pie isn't black!" or "Twilight isn't white!" is literally the most redundant argument in any fandom cause NONE OF THEM HAVE A RACE. IT'S ALL UP TO INTERPRETATION. YOU CAN SEE WHATEVER RACE YOU WANT IN THEM. THAT'S THE POINT!!!
Instances where race is implied do tend to irk me (very specific example are artists that draw humanized Lion King characters as white. Like noooo? That's not...)
This is a heavenly take I wish was discussed and agreed on more. 💜
