LinkThis info is generally pretty unknown to people not well versed in the pet keeping community but do NOT buy pets from places like Petco, Petsmart, and pet shows/reptile shows! They are all produced in BULK like merchandise and are often sickly and neglected or outright abused! And you should NEVER buy animals like cats and dogs, it's far better to adopt instead. Not only is adoption usually cheaper, you're helping an animal that's likely a rescue, helping them have a home, instead of buying from a puppy mill or a breeder. There are millions of animals right now who don't have homes because people continually buy other animals. So many animals die daily in shelters, alone.

LinkAlso, please for the love of god do genuine research before getting an animal. Do not impulse buy an animal, reptile, dog, or otherwise. Have the set up ready for any reptile/amphibian/any small animal ready BEFORE you purchase it. Research and set up should take you awhile. You could kill or worse, terribly deform an animal if you don't have the correct care.

LinkIf you want to buy a reptile, amphibian, or a small animal, go to local or online TRUSTED breeders. NEVER wild caught. (Unless it's an invasive species in your area)

LinkAny chance we could get this on pop? This is a genuinely really important PSA
I was always so surprised when people didn't know these things! Thank you for putting it into easy words more people should really know these things
It really is at our mercy, The kitten that I got most recently was gifted to me by a close friend because she legitimately couldn't handle having her and nearly killed her on accident twice and she didn't want to send her to the pound. I felt awful for her and the cat because she didn't trust that the cat wouldn't die at the shelter instead.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. ive seen so any people on tiktok not properly taking care of their animals. most every tiktok horse owner or trainer doesn't even take care of the horses properly, one time i saw this lady that tied up her horse while the horse was going crazy and freaking out trying to get away, the horse could have broken its neck and killed itself while she just stood there and said, "she's having another tantrum". A guy who claimed to be a "pro trainer" chased a horse with a car continuously honking the horn, if the horse fell, he could have easily run over the horse. i saw a lady put her ducks in oil to get attention. PLEASE yall PLEASE do your research before getting pets, even if its just a fish, still do your research.
it just amazes me the things people will do for a little bit of attention. ive seen a lot of people who dont get the right size enclosure for the animal, like hamsters, they need a good enough space to live, not one of those tiny little cages, and fish, putting them in those fishbowls' messes with the way they see the world, and half the time its not even big enough for the fish itself
Me who got my dog for free from an online breeder
But yeah it amazes me how many people don't know abt this when it should be more known
I couldn't really prepare for this gecko as I thought I wouldn't be getting it, my step mom put the tickets in not me. Me and her are doing our research right now and i'm going to do the best I can on keeping this little guy healthy and happy
Right now I'm using paper towels, it's just a baby. So I got it crickets, a 15 gallon tank and a heating pad. We gave him some crickets with calcium powder and now it seems to be doing fine, it's walking around and checking out it's tank. As it gets older and bigger I plan to switch to coconut fiber instead of paper towels
There's so much fish abuse brought on just by misinformation, its insane. I don't get why fish are marketed more as decorations than as pets.
Absolutely, alive ≠ happy in the slightest. Putting goldfish/beta/whatever in a bowl would essentially be the same as leaving a dog in a cage for its whole life, no space at all. But since fish don't display emotion as obviously as dogs somehow that makes people think its okay.
Have you seen those 'beta cube' things? Crazy how someone can look at that and think there's nothing wrong

Nother small thing- fish prices need to be higher. You shouldn't be able to buy a pet for less than a dollar because if someone hasn't done research it sets the expectations for how much maintenance they need way too low. Petsmart sells comets for $0.32, thats a fish that needs a pond's worth of space being sold for less than a bag of chips
deleted that comment twice cause the typos were bothering me lol
my girlfriend lives in a county that has a pound that is absolutely overrun with animals. so many people in her area have pets, particularly they have a lot of dogs, and so the pound never has enough room to keep all the animals. within three days of being there, the poor critters are put down. they try and get so much attention and advocate to get pets adopted, but they only do it within the county and PLENTY of people already HAVE animals, so it's a wasted effort. i dont doubt theres more places like that.
so many people abuse their fish w/ how they keep them,,, it's ****ing heartbreaking !!
like u don't know better but u never looked into keeping a fish, u don't by those stupid little bowls and shove them in. fish grow bigger, esp goldfish. u need a tank that is APPRORIATE for the fish, this is easy information to acess. u need a filter. u need to let the tank cycle for a few days or a week or however long it needs. u don't drop fish straight into to water, the difference between the water they are bagged in and the tank may cause them to go into shock and die, you let the bag float on the water on the tank so the water adjust to be the sae temperature slowly so the fish doesn't,, ****ing die.
u dont just throw them in a bowl and feed them when u remember. they have lives. they're not stupid animals.
people who abuse them for view on tiktok and youtube sicken me.
i do not feel remorse ! blocking them isn't enough i want them dead /hj
i may not own indoor fish, mine are outdoors so u have too look after them differently, but..... god. i hate how people ignore the abuse of fish, and even small animals like hamsters and pet mice/rats.
if people did this shit to dogs or cats they would be dead but, no one really cares about rats or fish.
rats are "dirty" (tehy r cleaner than cats and dogs but they got the plague blamed on them so :3) and fish are seen as an display piece rather than a ****ing living being. disgusting.
anyway can u tell my deep hatred for fish abuse.
hearing ppl in my school says "do people even get upset when a fish dies?" "i cant image that" and some of my fish had died recently,, and,, god that hurt 2 listen 2 so much
i cried outside of school when they first two passed away and lay awake at night as well bcs i was so ****ing upset :33
I'm really sorry to reply to this comment, if it's annoying, I'll delete.
But my mother gave my younger brother fish in 2019, and he never took care of it properly. One of his fish died within 2 weeks. But to be fair, he was a young kid at the time so I'm blaming my mother and my sister. They literally put the fish food out of reach so they would expect my younger brother to remember it, he wouldn't remember it. The tank was too small as well. They didn't know anything about fish at all, but neither did I until I started watching Soda Pets.
Now, I hate it when people do that to fish, they are literally living beings. Not ****ing toys or objects.
I wish somebody told me this when I was younger or that I was getting a cat as soon as I returned from my aunt's home.
My cat was a surprise, and I had never owned a cat before. I had cats around me, yes, but they weren't mine to take care of. I wish somebody told me so I was prepared, and I wish somebody told me how to take care of a cat. Had to do all of the research myself. Luckily for me, I didn't like hitting animals, so I never harmed my cat physically, but I could've neglected it because I was not educated. I am better educated now, though, my cat is still alive and living a good life.
But seriously, who surprises a 9 year old with a ****ing animal? Who gives a 9 year old that responsibility when it never happened before? I'm grateful for my cat, but I wish somebody told me beforehand or taught me. Had to do all of the research and learning my own.
Omg this!!
A lot of people also seem to think you’re ‘rescuing’ the animal if u buy them from these sorts of places but tbh ur just supporting the company by giving them money
personally i support adopt and shop responsibly. theres nothing wrong with supporting responsible breeders whos animals are bred for health, temperment, etc(in that case, im talking more about dogs and cats). shelter animals can be some of the most loving animals and do deserve loving homes. and most importantly do your research!!
