They said: After the Carthaginians, the Romans tried to bring Spain under their rule, but they only succeeded after 200 years of bloody battles against the Celtiberians and Lusitanians (under Viriathus). Defeated by Augustus. Augustus did not divide the peninsula into two provinces, Hispania Citerior and Hispania Ulterior, but into three: Lusitania, Baetica and Taraconensis. From the latter, the new province of Gallaecia et Asturia was branched off under Emperor Hadrian. The Basques in the north retained their independence. Since the Romans crossed the country with many roads and built numerous forts, the country was quickly Romanized and soon became the main seat of Roman culture, to which several Roman emperors (Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus, Marcus Aurelius, Theodosius I) and respected writers (Seneca, Lucanus , Martialis). Trade and traffic flourished, the population grew rapidly. Christianity spread rapidly in Hispania despite bloody persecution
