I'm pretty good at sewing, so I would suggest fleece for the fabric. It's really easy to sew with and it's stretchy. Any kind of thread will work.
I have never made a fursuit before so I don't know of any good patterns that you could use.
If you wanna add extra details, felt is the best. You could get either felting wool and a felting needle for needle felting the designs, or you could get the sheets of felt for 23 cents at Walmart and cut out shapes for the designs and sew them on. I use felt to make fabric plushies (meaning I make the entire plushie out of felt), and I needle felt designs onto crocheted plushies (like eyes and noses).
You'll have to look all this stuff up because I'm not an expert. All I know is I am waaaaaaaaayyyyy better at sewing than I am at drawing. I turn my drawings into plushies actually XD
