Here's his backstory, he is the forbidden offspring of a phoenix and a dragon. Because of this, he is able to will his scales to set on fire. When he first hatched, his father gave him to a band of griffins to hide Scorch from both the Phoenixes and the dragons (Usually when a phoenix dragon hybrid is born, they are thrown into the sea because they were dubbed "To dangerous to be kept alive.")
