Linkso idk i was listening to music and i was like "hey what if i told everyone hippo's backstory for literally no reason"
and so this is that
ok so
the story picks off on september 11th, 2001.
anyone recognize that date?
anyways.
hippo, at the time, was actually human. his name was michael, a 28-ish year old who worked near the top floor of the south twin tower. his life was going great so far, actually- he had a well paying job, a wife, and was soon expecting to become a father. good for him, i guess.
he was about to go on break when he heard an incredibly loud crashing sound outside, like a whole building just got hit. he looked over to the north tower to see smoke, flames, and a plain that had crashed right through 6 whole floors of the building. scary stuff.
michael was told by authorities not to exit the tower, to his discontent. but, luckily, about 20 full minutes of panic and terror, he was told to evacuate via the public address system. he was around the 92nd floor on the stairs.

Link(because the elevators were shut down) when the next plane hit his tower, eliminating 10 floors- 75 through 85. meaning he was stuck on the top of a burning, unstable building 92 floors away from the ground.
he was killed at 9:59 when the south tower collapsed.
michael woke up as a ghost not long after. immediately he went to go check up on his wife, who was sobbing uncontrollably on her couch.
every day after he died, michael would stay nearby his wife, wishing he could be there with her instead of just acting like it.
when his child was finally born, michael's wife had a lot of trouble taking care of her on her own- so, she contacted a friend of hers everyday to come and help her while she went to work. over time, though, she started getting over michael, especially since she spent so much time with her friend now. his wife, or should i say, ex-wife, started falling for, and eventually started a relationship with, her friend, or should i say, boyfriend.

Linkran away from everything he knew. he fled new york, ending up in vermont.
yay, vermont. i know nothing about vermont.
michael, at this point, was starting to get tired of being just a ghost. i mean, you're literally invisible to everyone and everything. nothing but thin air. imagine that.
he decided to try and possess something- but anything he tried, he either couldn't possess, or it was worse than being a ghost.
michael was about to give up when he had an idea. he quickly found a nearby closed party store and entered, trying to find a pinata to possess.
his thought process, by the way, was basically, "pinatas are like non-sentient animals, meaning i can possess them and have a body" so don't ask
he found one easily, that being a red, blue, yellow and navy blue pinata. he possessed it, renamed himself for shits and gigs, and will literally never leave it now unless it's broken.
if it breaks he cries

i know 9/11 might be a bit of a touchy thing to some people...

Linkand it was a really ballsy thing to put it as an oc's backstory in my opinion, but i did actually have an albiet distant family member who died in the north tower. i always kind of wanted to have an oc vaguely dedicated to them, and hippo was just that.
so yeah.
writing this made my hands hurt
