this is the version where they tried to steer the look away from too cartoony, this was the weird phase in their look where they had fins. They also had a big ass tail at this time. They didn't really like the character at the time so they almost scrapped them. But luckily they were kept, though not very much thought went into them, and they were always sloppily animated.
