By the winter of 1776, many colonists were beginning to wonder if the Continental Army could win any more battles against the British. The situation for the Patriot soldiers was getting dire (not good). But, General George Washington came up with a brilliant plan...On Christmas night around 11:00 PM, Washington led his army on a surprise attack against British forces that were camped in Trenton, New Jersey. Washington and his men crossed the icy Delaware River to reach the British camp. The British forces weren't expecting an attack on the morning after Christmas! The Continental Army successfully captured 900 British soldiers without losing a singe man. This victory was greatly needed by the Patriots.
